  5. I have seen many too many great artists of my time ..in 1971 I showed up to the venue you were playing only to find a sold out show..I sat outside and barely listen to a song..then I walked across the street and bought Teaser and the fire cat. The highlight of my life is to be able to see you and experience how wonderful it could be to share the musical night in San Diego California..I cant leave this world not knowing you.

There were moments of great joy for me to be so close to its spiritual magic. Would like to see your show again. I do not know if it will be possible. One day, who knows?

My parents raise me, but never taught me about Islam, so I have not enough knowledge about Islam. So back then, I have never realize that how important is Islam. In my teen years, about at the age of 15, I search on the internet about Islam, and of course other religions too, But things like, Hinduism, Buddhism and Silkhism just doesn't make sense to me, let say Silkhism, it has a combination of Hinduism and Buddhism. When I heard the nasheed "A is for Allah" on youtube, I searched your name, and I find out, you were once Cat Stevens in a late 60's and early 70's, so I listen to your music, and this gave me inspiration, joy and peace. I think your music made me go and learn about Islam and gain knowledge, & I quickly did, and I would say Islam is the truth, and when the Qur'an talks about the last day and the judgement day, it felt like, God warned me this before I was born. 50. "Roadsinger" offers songs brimming with a journey to the inner life, inseparable from a life lived in a big, wide and diverse world. The album's songs bring gladness and hope, just as Tea for the Tillerman's & especially "Can't Keep It In," did in my youth, and I praise the God of Abraham, Jesus and Mohammud for wisdom seekers and artists such as Yusuf.

  51. Yusuf, salaam aleikum - shalom aleichem from the Holy Land. We in Israel know you are today, as we remember you, a mean of peace and inspiration. You are the sound of my growth and adolescence, every song carries a memory, a love, an unrequited love, a hope and expectation. We all pray to travel on the peace train with our Palestinian cousins, in mutual recognition and respect, together with all children of Abraham, Isaac, Ishmael and Jacob, inshallah. Please come and visit both Israel and Palestine some time. Ramat Gan Stadium awaits you and we promise you a warm welcome. If we wait for peace, we will wait forever and life is too short to boycott an entire nation

  52. Once upon a time in Primrose Hill I worked a design studio. One day we received a water colour painting, I think it was in gouache, of a small boy and a cat, a track list and lyrics, and I was tasked with laying out the text and artwork for an album sleeve. I was spell bound, fresh out of art college and to be working on one of my biggest musical influencies was an honour. With scalpel, letraset and letterpress type ( and not to forget Cow Gum) the sleeve came together - oh how we all must miss the 12" covers

It saddens me when I read that someone as talented as you and Prince have let a religion make rules that you choose to follow and feel guilty when you don't, I figure you only live once and you should live by your own rules. So thanks for the memories and remember you were your best when you weren't a Muslim.

Much more than a religion and an English class at once, he used this magical piece to try to explain to children the many ways God proves His love day to day through such simple but amazingly beautiful things as dewfall to the grass; even though grass cannot make a praise (doesn't it really?) it receives His Grace. As child, it was easy to get the message, but at my fourties, as faith sometimes seems just not enough, hearing to your version of this almost psalm, is like raindrops to my thirsty roots. I know you probably read and hear this all the time, but it's not my intention to make any orininal statements here: only thank you Yusuf (then Steve) for inspire father Tom to put us closer to your songs, and for being so consequent with your beliefs and for keeping prayer in such a beautiful form for so many years.

I really don't know whether music is halal or not we have some quotes from prophet which means that it 's banned but maybe at that time they only had bad kind of music. and this is a order for that time ,the condition of time changed and some people sing for Allah. If morality and respect for Allah , prophet and... reserved, it couldn't be abandon music .although dancing is banned in islam and any kind of music that tempt you to do bad things or think about bad things but i think the kind of musics such as rap, hip hop or maybe rock aren't suitable for praising prophet or Allah. That's all!!!

A young man came in night after night to hear me, requested songs, etc. One night he came in with all this paperwork and he said he was authorized to offer me an opportunity to go on tour with you as an opening act. I was dumbfounded and of course said no. I was petrified of taking the next step to the "big time." I liked the small lounge work, the intimacy of such a close up audience. Besides, I was sure it was just an elaborate pick up ruse. I loved your music then, and still do today. Now all these years later, I feel another connection to you since I have discovered Sufism and the Qu'ran for myself. Still love your music and now the added aspect of your own spirituality and praise of God infusing it. I wish you all the best in your projects and purpose. I fight for my own here in the US, against bigotry and hatred, and promoting peace and tolerance and understanding. And for the salvation of our beloved planet. God hear our prayer. The sky stood still. The passerby bequeathed the branch of light he held to his lips to the darkness of sands and pointed to a poplar and said: “Before the tree, there is a garden lane greener than God’s dream where love is as blue as the wings of fidelity. Go on till that alley which emerges from maturity, then turn to the flower of loneliness, two steps before the flower remain at the foot of the eternal fountain of earthly legends where a transparent fear overtakes you. In the flowing sincerity of the space, you hear a rustling A child you see has climbed a tall pine, to take a chick from the nest of light and you ask him where is the home of the friend?”

It is night, And with night the world seems like a corpse in the grave; And in fear I say to myself: "What if torrential rain falls everywhere?" "What if the rain does not stop until the earth sinks into the water like a small boat?" In this night of awful darkness Who can say in what state we will be when dawn breaks? Will the morning light make the frightening face of the storm disappear? I too was raised in a very strict religious home, sheltered from the world of music, other than, c &w;, and what i heard on the radio, also limited. i did not know such great music was out there to be enjoyed! on my 12th bday, my sister took me with her to a party, a good crowd of decent kids. when i walked in the door the first think i heard was, you, singing rubylove, it was and still is a pivitol point in my life, i was introduced to the greatest music on earth, i sat with my ear glued to a speaker, totally entranced, my eyes had been opened to great possibilitys and thoughts, still to this day, when i hear any of your songs, my youth returns to me in waves, and i am forced to smile and do a little jig, I thank you for your great inspiring music, that has a times in my life brought me, like u, thru near death, and fear, and i am so grateful for all you have given the world, your music is the song of my heart, and you have an exceptional place, reserved, just for you, my dear cat! have a very beautiful birthday, and many many more i wish to you, and yours, peace to you Deb

I didn't know anything about you but I watched Linda Ronstadts old perfomans of "firs cut is the deepest" and I Was impressed. Intelligent and very deep, unterstandin song and melody. So I followed in youtube songs by your "cat stevens" name. God gave your gift of singing and melody by birth. Jeshua has been good to me, healing me and he showed himself to me 4 years ago. 128. I was born in 1968 so I was only about 3 years old when you were still going by the name Cat Stevens, but as I grew up and heard your songs on the radio, they spoke to me. In particular it's your song "Wild World" that I felt like you specifically had me in mind when you wrote it, even though you have never met me. That song has been my life's guide in a sense because I am a gentle soul and the world can be a wild place I have learned. I never knew what you looked like until recently. I only knew you by your voice and name. It is only recently that I have seen what you looked like back in the 70s when you were still Cat Stevens, with your dark wavy hair, beard, and moustache. You were beautiful back then and would definitely have been my type. No wonder your songs spoke to me and to my heart. We seem to be a lot alike in heart and spirit. I still like your music, even your lastest work which I am only now hearing and learning about. Thank you for sharing your music with us. Blessings, Christine. 134. I have been a life long fan of Cat now Yusuf. Your music and lyrics have always been inspiring. As a poet and artist you have touched the hearts, God bless you! You have now matured and your songs try to make the world a better place. In your own way, you remind me of other inspiring icons of music such a John Lenon and Michael Jackson, each in his own way was a true artist and has made a difference in this world.. Your last song 'My people' is a wonderfull tribute to our revolutionaries in Egypt and the Middle East, this song will definitely touch the hearts of the youth that have courageously and definitely changed part of our world, they made history and have sacrified their lives, as peacefull and non-violent martyrs, to make their country a better place for their children. God bless you Yusuf and God bless all the peace makers of the world, we need you to help us erase hatered, fanatism, violence, wars, dictatorships, corruption, ignorance and poverty from the face of the earth, and God Willing, we will succeed! To all those who support fanatism and hatered around the world, may God the Mercyfull teach you the language of Mercy and Love.

I used to listen to your music as a teenager and recently while feeling nostalgic for my youth, I listened to my old favorites of your music via YouTube. I had fun watching the young you and the older you now- and watched your journey with a knowing eye- from not just age but that journey to becoming Muslim and the questions and life that got you there. I noticed that your songs were always about love and peace and I was happy that I felt like they were halal. Father & son makes me cry and I think your song I'm looking for a hard headed woman who will make me do my best makes me cry too because I think you probably found that in your wife. I mean that very positively as I think you meant it in your song. I think there is a misperception that Muslim women are subservient or weak, quite a misperception because Islam makes people strong internally. It definitely makes you do your best and hamdullah I found a Muslim man and together we do our best. 197. Belinda: You have misunderstood. I would never be concerned about the theft of my work. That is why I jokingly "copywrite" it (instead of giving it to my brother, the attorney, for copyrighting). Following Isa, if someone claimed authorship of my work, I would feel obliged to offer the pitiful creature another slice of my creation. Rather, I was observing that famous and wealthy writers (like Yusuf) who have "deep pockets," are forced to worry about charges of plagarism that might result is a nightmare of legal disputes. Alas, one of many perils of wealth, is it not?
10 Feb 2011 purplemoon Report Comment
  198. Purplemoon: We could debate "notions" for all the days to come. However, I feel we are both loosing sight of the purpose for this website, which is Yusuf. My only intention was to share something special to me with someone to whom I felt embraced a love of poetry as well. This will be my last post on this subject, so take it for what you will. How does one Patten an idea? Ideas are nothing more that "original" thought; thoughts which emerge from ones core. Without some type of protection, ideas/thoughts could, as you pointed out, could basically be stolen. When a thought is stolen, it's as if a piece of ones soul/spirit has been extracted. My final 'thought' on copyright, or should I say the type in which I chose, was to protect a part of my self. After all, what good comes from pouring out a piece of oneself, if one is not able to share? I have never been interested in money, fame, or notoriety. God gave me a talent at an early age along with the freedom to use it as I choose. I am only speaking for myself. The world is made up of a rainbow of different ideas and philosophies, with each person having his/her own opinion. I respect your opinion and

  199. @Belinda: Don't, copyrights, like property rights in general, mostly protect the wealthy and powerful? Deep pockets may attract claims of plagarism. Unless ones compass is set for fame or wealth, what is the use of a copyright?

  200. Purplemoon: I really don't know if that holds true for the Poor-Man's Copy "Right." Which is just proof of ownership, not meant for commercial use. Plus, you do not have to go through all the paper work and waiting. Now, had I ever considered publishing, I would have gone through the proper, usual channels. However, my poems are personal and I am very selective as to which ones I share and with whom I share them.

  202. To Purplemoon. I corrected much of the english in my early works as I became older. As far as copy rights, my mother would bring my poems and writings to the post office and have them certified mailed to me/signature required. I have a thousand certified mail packages that are still sealed. If there is ever a question regarding the original writer and it goes to court, the Judge is given the sealed envelope, which is dated and signed. It's called the "poor mans" copy right, but it's legal because it goes through the US postal service and is still sealed. I hope this clarifies for you. I do want to thank you again for the information on Rumi and for the inspiration. I've not been inspired in a very, very long time. Isn't it funny how life can get in the way of life? Take care and talk to ya again soon.

  203. @Belinda: One of Rumi's early teachers said of him "There goes a river dragging an ocean behind it." Your English teachers must have had similar thoughts about you: How well you wrote when so very young! (And how clever of you to know about copyrights at age 11! ;) ) It is probable that the verses I quoted were written about a man Rumi met at age 37, Sham al Tabriz, a wandering Sufi mystic and "spiritual adept." Rumi was so profoundly affected by Sham that he gave up a successful scholarly career, became an ascetic and began writing ecstatic poetry, often with Sham as his soulmate-muse.

  205. To Purplemoon, You inspired me to share a poem that I wrote when I was 10 years old (1969). I had never heard of Rumi, so I googled him and was very impressed. A lot of the poems I wrote as a very young child are sort of along the same lines as Rumi's. Thanks for the inspiration. Song & Dance A beautiful, young girl, with long flowing golden hair, the color of the morning sun on the break of ocean waves; running fast and free with white Clydesdales. Thrashing the snow under their powerful hooves as they ran in slow-moton in the late afternoon-Red sun set. Their mane flapping in the wind intermingled with the girl's as she dreamed. She danced to the beat of the horses thunder and in her heart's eye, could see the man she loved. Although, she had not yet met him, she felt him. His eyes, no color, just soft and gentle. A strong man, though he knew how to touch without touching. Their souls knew each other and they longed to join. One day they would find each other and be complete. The song is finished, but the deep love, the love of soul-mates waits to begin. Th girl still dances, The horses never stop... -Belinda Davis Stephens (copy right 1970)

  271. Salams Br. Yusuf, I just returned home from our masjids first ever conference specifically for and about converts. One of the things mentioned repeatedly by the all aconvert panel of scholars and activists was the need for each convert to have a mentor. May Allah swt bless you for being mine. Even before either one of us became Muslim. Thank you, Kareema from California

  277. Yusuf, I am glad that you, through your work, are helping to dissolve the irrational fear of Islam in the West, like the Light of Truth shining in the shadows of bigotry. I am sad to say that Islam itself generates its own irrational fear and loathing toward followers of the Baha'i Faith, a religion that only asks for peace for all men under God. In many Islamic countries this bigotry is State Policy. Who will speak for the Baha'is?

Was thinking of my favorites and wondered how they might sound together and Yusuf and Alison Krauss just seemed to fit and found out only recently that Alison actually did some vocals on "Boots and Sand" and naturally I am hoping for more for my own selfish reasons but also for the unstated. I am somewhat new to the site and when I have a chance to peruse I am amazed by how much it offers and the artwork is simply wonderful. But then I should expect nothing less from someone who has given so much. Thank-you!

  301. I just wanted to make it known how wonderful I feel the current tour of Australia and New Zealand is. I flew over to Sydney to see it, and also saw it at home in Auckland. I was truly blown away and feel exceptionally privileged to have seen the show. I feel Yusuf’s performance could not have been any better, and the band was also spectacular. I also thoroughly enjoyed the support act. When I initially saw them in Sydney I did not have any idea what to expect, nor did I realise that it was Yusuf’s sons band. Completely different, but also wonderful. I adore how varied the age range is of the people who truly love the music. I am only 21, and went with a group of people starting at 16 years old, through to someone in their early 70’s. Truly wonderful that we can all relate. Now I only wish I could catch the other New Zealand concert! Thank you !!!
