New Year Message from a Close Friend

Dear luminaries,

It is now the beginning of a new year and it might be a good time to introduce myself. I am Yusuf’s Moonshadow and it’s quite possible that you’ve seen me sometimes with my leader, following closely behind. I try not to steal his limelight because that’s the nature of my position, and I’m quite happy to leave it that way.

Please let me take this opportunity to wish you all a bright new year. It’s my wish that the Musical Yusuf has been writing will see the light of day very soon, and then I’ll get my little share of recognition. Till then, don’t tell him I spoke to you in case he gets a bit niggly, I wouldn’t want him to imagine I’m talking badly behind his back.

1. You have a knack for creating sophisticated, complex arrangements, but sometimes there is no substitute for a song sung simply with a single instrument. I just listened to a recording of your Berlin performance of "Be What You Must" twenty times. And teared up twenty times. Perfection. I never appreciated how beautiful this song is until I heard it played this way. You MUST re-record it.

2. Before you leave Vienna, take a few moments to remember that they all laughed at Mozart when he wanted to write a musical in the German language. The Moonshadow Musical is a great debut, but there is so much great new music coming to you, waiting to be written down. ("Green Fields and Golden Sands" would be a beautiful title for a musical about the Arab Spring ... )

3. Did you notice that the unusual astronomical conjunction of mercury, venus and mars coincided with your performance in Paris? Not only that. It was almost exactly conjunct to the true node in your birth chart. I was teasing about the artwork: The crescent moon in the Paris painting may be astronomically incorrect, but compositionally, it had to be facing inward, just as you drew it. (And waxing, just like you!) The yellow-haired "sad lisa" floating over Paris --- C'est moi? My soul went to Paris without the rest of me and still hasn't returned ...

4. I hope the Mannheim concert went well and that the size of the audience didn't disappoint. I was surprised by the choice of Mannheim when it's only an hour from Frankfurt. (Was Freiburg, Basel or Zurich considered?) From the vineyards to the Schwartzwald, Baden-Wurtenburg is the most beautiful region of Germany. Hazelnut ice cream. Treat yourself to a double portion. You deserve it.

5. "A mistress to magicians and a worshipper of God." I must profess shock that "mistress to magicians" passes your lyrical litmus test --and greater shock that you blithely imply that a woman of that description might also be in submission to The Divine. As a lover of God, student of religions, celestial mechanic, and former flaxen-haired, beach-dwelling, ballet dancer who was once in love with a musician nicknamed "magician" (I am not making this up), I find this revelation to be both hysterically reasonable and reasonably hysterical. It's a cryin' shame that bad things happen to clothing left in trunks in basements for twenty years. Otherwise, wearing my beloved, full-skirted, black velvet coat from the 70s while dancing to this video of Angelsea would have been beyond excellentooo^^^ .
  
  Webmaster's Reply: Actually, Yusuf changed those lyrics to "a mystery to magicians, and a worshipper of God", though the first line sounds like the original... it's changed.

7. "King of Trees" in Berlin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Cvk9X-Ug3w . YEAH! Totally in the groove. Were you more relaxed at they keys here than in Stockholm? (Hmm... Did you wear the hat in Stockholm because you were nervous?) The harmonic inversions with the vocals in this rendition are excellent. Be kind, to yourself, and to those maturing vocal cords.

8. Excerpt from a glowing review in Der Tagesspiegel, Berlin, 16 May 2011 [my translation]: "Yusuf has forgotten nothing of what Cat formerly had. Actually, his voice sounds even better than before. Deeper, more mature, perhaps even wiser. And it no longer has a slightly moaning goatish sound----" Huh?????? LOLOLOLOL A. Written by a man. B. Written by a German. (It's OK --I'm married to one!) The writer at Berliner Morgenpost flunked Metaphors 101: Well ---DUH---of course, it's cluttered, it's a CONSTRUCTION ZONE!

9. Great use of orange in the new tour poster! It seems so appropriate that you chose that color for the face of the old Cat, but superimposed the image of yourself in simple black and white. I probably would have chosen a mottled green/blue/purple/orange for the lettering instead of red. Did you notice how much better you look standing beside the orange instead of in front of it?

10. Now that you are soaking up the limelight again with two albums and plans for a major European tour, it is probably just a matter of time before the press starts taking pot shots. I can almost hear the comedians already: "When John Lennon was supporting feminists with 'Woman is the nigger of the world', Cat Stevens was looking for a hard-headed woman. As soon as he found it, he put a hijab on the problem!" Ugly, ugly, ugly. If you were not the closest thing to a living saint that I have ever witnessed, I'd draw that cartoon myself. When I think about your position on this issue, I fear for your legacy.

14. I have a continuous candle lit for you Mr. Moonshadow so you can carry on with Thirst and Passion , Focus and Creative Clarity to have the Musical come to magnimous fruition .. 17. David F, maybe I'm wrong, but think about it, perhaps what moon dwellers saw on Dec 21 2010 was their moon's solar eclipse where some unseeable dark selfishless sphere stole moon's sunlight? As long as this world's 'Babylonic' economic system of Buying-n-Selling (BS), bartering, one world monetary system, credits etc... is in existence, then deceptive, 'suave', peace-like-looking borders of new kinds will emerge, but until 'Aslan' returns, peace heralders will bugle-on pointlessly, for did not the great Lion 'Aslan' lamb-like sacrifice himself to eradicate our diseased Self condition that creates borders on this beautiful blue planet plagued with the perverted triad of Pride-Power- Pleasure where only Sacrifice-Submission-Sanctification is the solution shadow?

20. I'm being followed by an Earthshadow. From here on the moon, what people on Earth call a Moonshadow, we call an eclipse. From here it's a beautiful thing. One crescent moonshadow moving over that big blue & white swirling beach-ball. Over continents, and clouds, and oceans. But you don't see any borders. From here the view is beautiful. It almost makes you believe that the Earth is but one country and mankind its citizens.

21. Hi Mr Moonshadow You chose not to publish my recent comments on 'eclipse and alignment...' ? What? Why? Yesterday with my wife and 3 children we viewed 'The Voyage of The Dawn Treader' in 3D. Tears soiled my cheeks with 'Aslan's comment to Lucy that she will find him back in England by another name another identity. Yusuf, is The One calling for unprecedented unity amidst the faiths of the world, and in particular, Islam, Judaism and Christianity that together have critical common root in 'Aslan' ? Blogs should produce a network that results in real positive effect. I live in Butte County Northern California. Is Yusuf coming anywhere near here any time soon on tour etc?

Eclipse and Alignment: So that either makes you busy orbiting 'Mr Moon' Shadow casting Yusuf himself, or his submitted wife 'Mother Earth', or some Mr as you say, all on some local to global spiritual social economic objective journey? Was 'Mr Moon' a bit niggly 10 days ago on the darkest longest night in Western Hemisphere on Mother Earth when at the same moment she and moon aligned with sun, totally eclipsing Moon's shadow casting powers on Earth? "Moons, planets, suns, systems, and galaxies â€“ all revolving mind-boggling distances from one another. Ah but one must have patience... to wait... until some day soon we shall see Mr Moonshadow... a deep soul, tip toeing... emerging... glowing ...upon the enchanted stage, where life and soul merges with theatre ...and magic is shared with eager eyes and ears, hearts are called, other souls mesmerised by the sounds.. colour... and story, but if only we could step into that magical place and walk and talk with Mr Moonshadow.. what might we learn? 31. Mr Moonshadow, wishing you a very happy new year. May the New Year bring you good health, love, and peace. I hope your wish comes true, I too wish the musical will see the light of day very, very soon in the new year. Don't worry, I wouldn't think of saying a word, the last thing we need is a niggly Yusuf, but because he is such a good soul, and you are his shadow, and lifelong companion, I don't think he would ever think badly of you, what would he ever do without you. Actually the resemblence is remarkable, so it's hard not to steal the limelight every now and then. I guess after so many years being his moonshadow, it will be a great day when Yusuf himself intoduces us to you. Oh Moonshadow, it is just so like a human, particularly those of the male persuasion, to claim possession of all available luminesience, completely ignoring the needs and aspirations of their shadowy counterparts. Why, some even go so far as to assert that we would not exist without them --rather than the other way around-- simply because they are incapable of seeing us in the absence of light. A pox upon their feeble human eyes! We can always see them! Shadows Unite! Cast off the shackles of subservience! Solidarnosc! Arise and walk out, Moonshadow!
