If Only Soldiers Could Help - Not Hurt

Just reading a news piece about soldiers from the USA being sent to help out in the disaster zone of Haiti made me think: Oh wow, wouldn’t it be amazing if armies were employed to behave more like this; to help out populations in trouble, rather than inflicting more planeloads of suffering…

1. Canadians were once known for being the Peacekeepers before the americans made us come into their wars. Yes agree with you if only this was what soldiers did not bring harm to others, especially the women and children. In Canada we have www.freethechildren.org ensuring that our children (perhaps your grandchildren) will understand that there is a better way. sorry you have left the UK, I missed being able to listen to you speak when you were in Canada, hoping you can come to Vancouver, but totally get that your life in now in Dubai with your grandchildren. You came back from where you had to be to offer music to those of us who loved you as Cat Stevens as now as I am older... I appreciate you as Yusuf Islam. best wishes from your most loyal atheist.

3. Maybe there are a million good, happy, blessed things that happen around each of us every day. And maybe it's just that they don't hurt that we don't see them. The guy who holds a door open for an old woman who has her hands full, the kid who beams a smile at a stranger in a train station and makes them happy for just a moment, the busy shopper who drops a dollar in a collection bin to help someone they don't know and will never meet. The 100 people who let you merge onto the freeway every month, when you need to get there. Why remember only the one guy who cut you off? or the one crabby clerk - who has a story to tell if you ask? or the one person who, at this time in their life, is all about "them"? or the soldiers who wade hip-deep in flood waters to help people to dry ground or who line up to give blood for a kid who needs a transfusion? Maybe it's because they don't get any press anymore? Maybe you'll see what you want to see, I guess. But for every bullet I see ten times ten times the kindness, elsewhere. Maybe it's just that these things don't hurt that we don't notice them. Maybe we should.

6. First and foremost, I loved and was inspired by his music when I was 15 and still at 50. For those that have just discovered this site, we must question everything that we were told as children and learn to examine situations for ourselves. Read, Listen, Watch, Observe... Reason for yourself. Listen to your Heart in all things. Too often we are the reflection of an opinion of someone other than ourself.

15. I would have to agree with Yusof that there are lots of people in this world who are hyprocritical and prejudice (feeling sorrow for some and not for others). We all feel sorry for those suffering in Haiti but dont forget there are as many people and children or more suffering in wars around the world such as in Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine etc. Did the people there choose to be caught in these wars and who is caring for them ? Some nations argue that they must suffer to be able to punish the very few "fugitives" in the country- IS that the right way !!! THINK !!! 18. Beautiful thought on armies employed to only help. All I can do is hope that mankind will continue to help one another. I went to Vegas last weekend for a wedding & proudly wore my Redroom shirt from o2 and when we checked in we were put in the Redroom at the Paris hotel (which of course I felt good Karma about that) then I met a couple of people at the Palms from England and Ireland that evening. They were polite enough at first maybe even a little stand-offish then I mentioned to them that I was from Cali and went to England, Shepard's Bush, to see Cat Stevens/Yusuf play and we all embraced. All of a sudden it was like we all were one. It was beauty. I feel your music is changing people and the world today. If it can make strangers unite with hugs and tears what else could it make a positive affect on? Please play again! And again! More people need to hear you. xoxo Mica

19. I got a kick out of Greg Hutchinson's post: "Back in 1976 my mother would make my brother and myself listen to cat stevens if we were being bad. We never complained..." Ha! Ha! What a wise mother!..... I'm a little embarassed to admit this, but I remember one time when I was a kid running crazily around the house, making siren sounds (playing cops and robbers with my sister), these lines blasted on the stereo and made me stop dead in my tracks and laugh uproariously: Another fella told me He had a sister who looked just fine Instead of bein' my deliverance She had a strange resemblance To a cat named Frankenstein....... The lines sound a little mean to me now, but I just loved them when I was a kid, and much to my motherâ€™s relief, they definitely, magically got me to stop running around like a banshee.

I think it's easy to recognize the external forces behind the desperate conditions in Haiti, but perhaps a look inside, into a leadership and a system which perpetuates poverty, will reveal at least some culpability, Remember, there have been many, many time throughout modern history where troups, including the UN, have tried to deliver aid to people, only to be stopped by their own governments (Live Aid 1985 is a good example).

31. Yusuf, what incredibly hopeful words of wisdom! In many ways I see it all coming down to a change in consciousness, which will ultimately lead to a change in actions. What matters is our internal spiritual essence, and in what state it is in. Many people in this world have undergone spiritual realizations that have led to understandings that are at the core of their spirituality. They see the world through the grace of God by having a different perception of what matters and what their purpose on this planet truly is, as the love of the One fills their souls. Hopefully, one day we will see many more examples where those involved in war type activities today, become only creatures of empathy, humility and love, offering assistance, help, and support where it is needed. What a world it would be if the consciousness of humanity becomes that which God intended.

34. Soldiers wouldn't be needed if there weren't bad people in this world.. after all, it took the US bombing in Bosnia to stop the Muslim genocide there. Man's favorite past-time through the ages seems to be killing each other. And I love you to bits, Yusuf, but the subtext of this blog is very upsetting to me. Where is the moderate Muslim voice to speak up against the violent fundamentalists in their midst who are causing so much trouble in our world today? WHERE ARE THEY? 38. It can be incredibly disheartening when power is abused or used for evil. But when itâ€™s used for good â€“ to maintain order and to protect and provide for all the people with justice and respect, as the soldiers and many others are doing in Haiti right now â€“ wow! Itâ€™s amazingly beautiful and makes us believe in humanity once again. That seems to be the silver lining in this choking cloud of earthquake dust - people from all over the world doing their heartfelt, teary-eyed best to help the helpless. Sometimes I wonder about natural disasters like earthquakes n if the buildings in Haiti were regulated when they were built-certified for the compounds that they used2withhold certain conditions.. I kno in LA and NYC there r guidelines and certifications that must be met but Im sure there arent any in Haiti so yes this is a natural disaster but also caused by man when constructing buildings and the lack of concern at that time when building .. so I think about that sometimes too.. and as for Peace on this Earth... We should always thirst for it never quench that thirst.. but somehow Earth is not suppose 2 be complete Peace but the testings of each persons paradise within themselves n the development of that transcension so I think it is an Ascent Up the Spiritual Ladder for us all on our Journey to attain more peace n generate it but God put Everything before us and that is what we see on this Earth .. pretty much everything .. and some that dont want peace but their greedy ideas.. But we most certainly can get sooo much closer to Peace than we are that is for sure!! And we Will!!!! The Power of the Peace train can go faster than the Eurostar if we believe :::) Smile! 40. I think a lot of us watching the recent news broadcasts from Haiti, would have had very similar thoughts to Yusuf. I, certainly did. There were a lot of smiling faces on soldiers, and the people they were helping. It was great to see children so happy just to get their own bottle of water. As one of the soldiers said, they were doing as much as they could, though aid was slow getting through. How uplifting for the souls of all those soldiers, to give life, rather than having to take life. Sometimes we do need the military for very sad reasons, but there have been lots of useless wars, a supreme example being the First World War. However, thinking about World War Two and the Bosnian war, there seemed no choice. Other more recent conflicts all seem to have been much more complex. But the results, as always seem to be the killing of innocents, and terrible waste of human, environmental, financial resouces, and lasting bitterness and vengeance/retribution. Love and Peace.xxxx

Yusuf I think you have really touched upon a Realization here ..It has made my eyes sparkle and Im smiling â€¦ I hope that you will write this in the Times or somewhere where you give this well-lit vision ..a chance to surface and sparkle for many to see possibly with the Gods Eye we all possess â€¦ .and have it be as a reminder that will revive (revival) many in different facets of the world (World Leaders) a chance to stop and take a look listen and absorb this as the awakening of Life and the significance of everyones being their own to search thru their life to find Truth and Identity for that is the inborn pulse God put in us .. some donâ€™t know that and or donâ€™t have the communications skills to get the end result they want or seriously have just forgotten what they are fighting for and taking someone elses advice and joining that bandwagon and the song is not for the good!â€¦.. What is everyone fighting for.. for thousands of years for what!!!!!.-alll over the world I mean everywhere people pushing ideas on each other â€¦ when Love is the feeling we should be shining and selling and and displaying what we should be exerting ourselves to make an example..i

48. For once - I will have to not agree totally with you. US Forces are trained in the military for both war and saving lives. It really depends on the situation. US Troops have gone in to help many people for many years in these types of situations - and then come home. After the trade center bombing we had no choice but to go after who killed all the innocent people. Our military are good people - and trained to help those in need - even in a war zone. So - time will tell - but I don't think the world will ever be without some type of military - and probably won't be in a position to be that. All of us working together toward peace - maybe someday - there can be a group trained specifically for these needs - but today - is simply isn't realistic.. I am sorry - but I know you also understand the right to disagree with respect for your views.....with all due respect and admiration as always... Marge Griffith

Oh Yusuf it's so true what you are saying would'ent that be wonderfull and it would change the whole world ,soldiers to help but everyone also the ones with the bad plans in there minds need to follow if only war did'ent bring all that money up and some only see that and there desire for more . 50. yes,i do agree,and this is a human move to open a sunshine window in a dark polluted world('' RUINS''),inspite that the intension is vague,to help people in a disaster at 'Haiti' in one arm,and to kill innocent poor unarmed people(Irak-Afghanstan)using the stronger arm? only GOD,is judging the intention.
