Great British Muslim Scholar and Friend Dies
Yusuf attended the funeral of one of the most learned and experienced British Muslims, Gai Eaton, on Saturday 27th February at Brookwood Cemetery, Woking. He was deeply saddened by his passing and holds Gai (Hassan) to be one of the greatest British Muslims he ever had the good fortune to meet.
Charles le Gai Eaton, also known as Hassan Abdul Hakeem, died on Friday, on the eve of the Prophet’s birthday. He was 89. A popular writer and Muslim convert, Gai is celebrated for playing a significant role in Islam in Britain and has been referred to as the “closest towering patriarch in articulating Islam for modern Britain.â€
Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1921 and raised as an agnostic by his parents, Gai was educated at Charterhouse and King’s College, Cambridge. He worked for many years as a teacher and journalist in Jamaica and Egypt, and joined the British Diplomatic service in 1949. He converted to Islam in 1951.
“A philosopher of love at heart, his writings are some of the most profound insights to the spiritual depth of Islamic thought and understanding,” said Yusuf Islam, “he was a friend and the best example you could dream of having during the days of my early steps in Islam.”
Following his conversion, Gai Eaton served as an inspiration to the Muslim community in the West. His books include “Islam and the Destiny of Man,†“King of the Castle†and “Remembering God.†He also worked with Yusuf on his album, “Prayers of the Last Prophet,” book and CD, reading the verses of the Qur’an in English.
“May God bless the departed soul of our brother and elder, Hassan, and grant him the best and highest of company in the Garden of Bliss, which is where this man always seemed to me to belong.”
