Yusuf Gives 'Nod' to Permanent Foundation Back in UK
Yusuf Islam has given approval for a new Foundation to be established in the UK carrying his name. The Yusuf Islam Foundation was formed earlier this month and it will assume the responsibility for his schools, caring for orphans and running his cultural initiatives, including the Maqam Exhibition Centre in Queen’s Park.
The Trustees will include his wife, Fawziah Islam, and Abdul Kareem Khaleel, director of the Muslim Cultural and Heritage Centre, London. The new Foundation will benefit from high standards of corporate governance and professional management from a motivated and dedicated team.
The Foundation will seek funds from third parties to help support the growth and development of the projects, though Yusuf’s historical and ongoing donations will underpin it’s work. Shares in one of his publishing companies, Salafa, were gifted to charity many years ago and the Foundation will benefit from this gift in the future. The rights of many classic Cat Stevens’ songs are held by Salafa among them some of the most famous copyrights from his catalogue including “Wild World”, “Can’t Keep It In”, “First Cut Is The Deepest” and many others.
Yusuf, who now lives permanently in Dubai, will hold no executive position within the Foundation as he is to devote himself fully to his grandkids and more writing.
“I’ve reached that stage in my life where I feel ready to make another big change. There are many good people able and willing to take over my work in the UK.
“Passing sixty has an impact on your outlook, but I was never one to stand still. In the words of my song, ‘There’s a way and I know that I have to go.’ “
Yusuf’s humanitarian work will not stop and he also plans to do more traveling spreading the important message of peace and understanding.
He is currently discussing the possibility of a Tour in the Far East and Australasia in June 2010.
