Yusuf To Feature In Zaman Newspaper

This coming weekend (July 25th), Yusuf will appear in Turkish newspaper Zaman as part of an in depth Q&A.

The exclusive interview will be the cover story of the publication’s Arts section.

3. Although I am over 50 I did not become a Yusuf "fan" as such until last year when I heard Another Cup. Have since gone and brought most of his albums of the 1970s - so I worked backwards. Loved the Islamic/Western mix in Another Cup. Probably like it better than Roadsinger so far but probably see Roadsinger as having a melancholic feel for a purpose of its own. Note Yusuf has said he would like to come to NZ as he has never been here. Hope he does but not in winter - it rains so much he'll think he never left England.

4. Yep, I totally agree, the 'Zaman' interview was brilliant. Apart from posing intelligent questions and allowing Yusuf the space to tell his story and express himself most beautifully and powerfully thereby, it also exemplifies the difference between the open, questioning attitude of the Zaman interviewer - "sing me your song, I'm listening", and the closed, judgemental mind of the Sunday Times journalist: "Perform for me!". Ironically, both interviews were published on the same day. Same day, different worlds.

8. I'm sure the article in Zaman will be more intelligently-written than the rather fatuous piece, 'Yusuf Islam: What's New, Pussycat?' which appeared in the UK's The Sunday Times on 26th July 2009. Though there are a couple of interesting and witty observations, this article largely is an illustration of willful ignorance and, I think, bad faith, on the part of the journalist and says more about her own blinkers, limitations and arrogance than anything about her subject. No wonder Yusuf Islam allegedly insisted on recording the interview. 13. I tried to post up - but I think I went too long. So - for the short of it - Happy Birthday Yusuf - maybe it be healthy, happy and prosper. Thank you for coming back to us - your music is simply the most wonderful music ever written. I believe Roadsinger,might just in fact, be your best work! Saw you in 1970 opening for Traffic in Philadelphia - I had front row center seats - will never forget that night. Thank you again - and congrats on the Prince's Trust - you deserve it! :-)

If I can be so brazen to speak for your fan base, I must say, we did not mind waiting the 30 years it took to "find yourself" and find your place, your path, and your peace in this life.   Your songs changed my life forever when I, by crazy-random-happenstance, stumbled upon the movie Harold & Maude when I was 13 years old. Your music resonated so deeply within me it helped me through many a dark time. Now I am 23, working as a therapist in Philadelphia, and still adore every glorious message you have conveyed to us all. No matter what mindset I am in, there is a song you have created to suit my mood, and if need be, lift me up.
