Yusuf Plays Liverpool

Saturday night saw Yusuf returning to the great city of Liverpool for a show at the Liverpool Echo Arena.

The show followed the same format as the previous critically-acclaimed Birmingham show – kicking off with a bonus 25-minute preview of ‘Moonshadow’ followed by an intermission after which Yusuf took to the stage with a full band to perform hits, both new and old, from his extensive back catalogue.

After an amazing show in front of a loving audience, his first encore was a tribute to the Beatles’, Long and Winding Road, in honour of the four lads from Mersey. Wow!

1. I saw you play Liverpool as an almost 14 year old way back in1973 and have loved your music always . I was thrilled to see you returning after all these years and bought my tickets as soon as they became available . Sadly ,I got really sick on the Friday and was far too ill to leave the house and missed your concert ,a night that I had waited over 30 years for . I was at the Liverpool concert last week and enjoyed every minute of it - though the venue was more "impersonal" than the Shepherd's Bush Emporium in May, the atmosphere became just as compelling, and for me it was a very emotional occasion - never thought I'd see Yusuf twice in one year, after decades of listening to and loving his music. Just wanted to say how much I enjoy the songs from the two new albums, and I don't feel that Yusuf needs to ask the audience to "indulge" him....These songs are truly wonderful in their own right, my favourite being "Where True Love Goes". 3. First of all i would like to thank you Yusuf for choosing Liverpool as one of the venue's for your tour. I was at the Dublin performance and was sickened by some of the crowds actions so i felt i had go to my home town gig and ive got to say ive never felt prouder to be a scouser! the crowd loved every second of it, the atmosphere was totally different to Dublin and i think even the great man himself enjoyed it more. thanks Yusuf for comming here i hope you and your family enjoyed our city please dont let it be your last visit.

4. A wonderful evening, the amazing voice is still there, the band was really tight and the sound levels excellent, well done Echo arena. A nice balance between old and new material. Hope you will not be too long returning Yusuf. The showcase of the new musical "Moonshadow" was a nice idea as was the start of the encore with The Beatles "Long and winding road" (What are you going to use for the Albert Hall Yusuf ? Waterloo sunset maybe !) I must just mention how much Kwame Yeboah, who was intoduced by Yusuf as playing "everything else" seemed to be enjoying himself at the back, a one man show in his own right. 6. I grew up with four older brothers who all played the guitar. From the age of 4 I can remember hearing Cat Stevens. Sadly, two of my brothers are dead now. Neither of them were of how to or that there was another path in life. It was an honour for me to see you in Liverpool recently and not only enjoy the pure, unadulterated simplicity and genius of your music, but to remember that you were their inspiration too. If only they had been shown another way they may have been with me to enjoy it. You are an inspiration to me and many others and obviously a man who is very much at peace with himself. 8. Hello Yusuf, I am a HUGE fan of yours, and although I am teen, I still believe you won't find a more Cat fan than me! I am upset to face the fact that I won't be able to go to your show tomorrow. I sadly, could NOT AFFORD your tickets, I am only a university student in London, and itâ€™s a shame a true fan missed out, anyway a true fan can still go? anyone know any cheap tickets available, please I would be forever grateful?- I fear that this tour might not come again, it depends on you but if not then I guess I have missed my chances completely! Others were fortunate of seeing you in 1976, this would be my FIRST chance of seeing you. And other people, have sold your tickets and made extra cash- not fair- the true ones missed out. 9. I'm still in disbelief that the events of Saturday night truly happened. I saw Cat Stevens in concert in 1976 at the Chicago Stadium and never thought I would have the privilege of seeing the man in concert again in my lifetime. I flew to Liverpool from Detroit, Michigan USA and was not disappointed.What a magical experience it was!I had a front row seat, met many other devoted Yusuf fans and of course, enjoyed the music both old and new. My hope is Yusuf, that you will come to the USA and tour again soon.Your music has been an important part of my life for much of it.Thank you for that gift.

I came from the Netherlands to see you, and would have been grateful anyway to see you perform, but you and your band played so very very good and I am so glad to have been there!! 12. travelled from Yorkshire with much excitement to see you perform and what a reward! Closed my eyes and floated back to your concert in Glasgow, early seventies when I was a devoted fan. Nothing has changed I still am.Your voice and presence are still unique. Didn't want it to end.You said you were running out of songs but the well never runs dry. Feel privileged to have seen you live once more, never thought it would happen.Only disappointment was the huge venue, longed for the time when I stood stagefront only a few feet away.The music world is again richer.

13. Hey Yusuf, saw you on saturday in Liverpool.... it was worth the trip from Belgium and even more!!! I've been listening to your music since I was a little boy and especially "father & son" means something to me as I am a father of four boys and I've never known my own dad. So my wife and me loved watching the show and we are really looking forward to seeing the rest of the musical! 16. Saturday night in Liverpool saw a dream come true for me. I will treasure the memory of seeing you live forever. It was superb. I see many concerts and am married to a musician myself so I appreciate talent and talent is what you and your superb band members have. Thank you a million times over and keep spreading your beautiful peaceful songs to the world. They helped me through my daughters death. Maybe there's a world that I'm still to find.

What a truly amazing gig on a cold wet night in Liverpool listening to those old Cat songs took me back to my holiday sitting at the pool with you on my Ipod under the sun not knowing six months later you were to gig in the arena I closed my eyes and I was back in Nessebar.I read the review from Dublin maybe those minority of planks would be better off going to see Jedward. 23. The trip from Skegness for 4 long time fans, was well worth while. What a fantastic show. Can't wait to see the musical and would like to attend the opening night. When is it? Yusuf has not lost his talent, his songs are meaningful and moving. He put his heart and soul into the performance. A most professional support group. Great to see 'real' musicians play without overwhelming special effects. Wish we could go to the Albert Hall! Liverpool was the best concert we have ever attended.

24. Just got back to Northumberland after our trip to Liverpool, to see Yusuf. What a fantastic evening; the preview of Moonshadow was really enjoyable (very talented young artists) and the main concert was brilliant, a great mix of old and new. 27. Thank you, thank you, thank you for an amazing night of entertainment. The musical extract was brilliant and was a great alternative to having a support band; I am looking forward to seeing the musical. The cast were great including the lead man who stood in at short notice. Yusuf and the band were outstanding, one of the best gigs I have seen. It was obvious that the songs meant as much to Yusuf as they did to Cat Stevens! The new material was excellent I was looking forward to hearing some new material having bought the CD's previously. A great selection of music old and new; so once again, thank you. Wish I could be at the Albert Hall to experience it all again.

29. The concert in Liverpool was indeed magical. The musical excerpts at the start were excellent and the perfomance by Yusuf and the band was outstanding. The set list was a real pleasure and beautifully put together. How anyone (David's comment ) could suggest that Yusuf avoided "the songs we grew up with" is astonishing. Maybe he could tell us which songs he felt were missing. Even the most incidental 'Cat Stevens' fan, who went along just to hear his 'greatest hits', could not have felt short changed by a set that included Morning Has Broken, Father and Son, Peace Train, Moonshadow and Wild World. Personally I thought Lilywhite and Fill My Eyes were just superb and Boots and Sand, Roadsinger and City After Dark were every bit as good. I've been a Cat Stevens fan since my boyhood and I'm now 51 - there was absolutely nothing more he could have done to make last night the concert going highlight of my life. I hope all you folks heading to the Albert Hall on Tuesday are treated to as great a show as we had last night.

30. Yusuf was absolutely wonderful!! As were Alun Davies, and the rest of the band. The musical excerpt was magical,and full of aura. Yusufs voice (and the rest of him), was in amazing form. He sang with great energy, and enthusiasm, and seemed really happy. We, the audience were certainly very happy with him! There was lots of laughter, love and fantastic music. I coudn't sleep at all the night before, so it was just knowing what I would miss that got me on the train to Liverpool, with my daughter. She did'nt know quite what to expect, but was shouting out "We love you, Yusuf!!, towards the end of the show, as were many others. Yusuf sang the Beatles "Long and Winding Road" brilliantly.(they would have been very impressed) It was a totally wonderful experience. The audience were still trying to get him to come back on after the final encore!!xxxx

31. With the greatest of respect, I don't understand the comment from David below. From a total of about 24 songs only 7 were from the 2 newer albums. I certainly wasn't expecting the full back catalogue of the songs from over 30 years ago, but there was a good cross section of the older songs. As Yusuf said, when he's written new songs he wants to play them and in my opinion,for what it's worth, the old and new blended beautifully. I saw no arrogance or self-indulgent mumbo jumbo. Perhaps David would like to clarify? I am sorry for his disappointment, but feel and hope he was in a minority with that view. But hey, we are all entitled to our opinions, and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening. Thank you to all involved in putting the show together!

32. Scanning through the above - and watching You-Tube videos - this seemed as though it was a magical and happy night. Yusuf is comfortable on stage - laughing and enjoying. This is important - because if he is comfortable - and having fun - there is a chance - he could do small tours in the future. I am not sure what David up there expected - but Yusuf's catalog is huge and you can't please all the people all the time. David is the one not pleased. Everyone seems to love "Into White" - one of my favorites - but this man must sing what he feels. Thanks for another evening of pleasure. We went to Dublin - boy - what a change in audience behavior. Liverpool was wonderful - and I love when he laughs -. RAH will only be better. 36. as a life long fan i had many a good night listening to your music and never did i dream a may get the chance to see you sing in my lifetime,however there you are back on the road .I had to get a ticket abiet a bit expensive Â£180 for 2. 48. Liverpool - what a fantastic night. Yusuf/Cat came across as a really nice guy ... and his unique voice was as good as it was back in the 70's ... superb. He played all the hits and newer material ... and the Long and Winding Road was a nice touch. Up there as one of the best concerts we've ever been to ... and definitely the most emotional. 50. Oh my god, awesome, I have just got home from the Liverpool Echo Arena show, what a fantastic moving experience. One of the top 4 days of my life in all honesty, children and marriage have to be up there. If you are goingto see this man be prepared he is a gift from god. I am on the peace train, purely through the message of his songs and his style. He is fantastic at sending his message of peace and love through his songs and I am not sure if that is his intention but the message is PEACE and LOVE although he is not doing it in a preaching manner all he is doing is singing you songs like an angel that are captivating and beautiful. The man is awesome and needs to be seen to be believed. He is John Lennon/Bob Dylan/Ghandi. Yusuf(Cat) we love and get your message, peace and love. Fantastic performance. Terry

I first time I saw you perform, was in Melbourne 1972. A very long time ago, but time travels fast. I always dreamed, but never dreamed, if that makes sense, that fate, the stars, the moon, would arranged for me, to be in close vicinity, at the right time, the right place, to see you perform once more. I was one of the very lucky people to have seen you at Shepherds Bush in May, and I thank my lucky stars, and you. Fate this time, did not allow me, to be amoung the fortunate ones going to a 'Take My Time' concert, BUT!!!!, I know there is a bunch over next door, on Majicat,(I hope they won't be too upset with me for telling), you may have heard them, because they are loud, who are going to the RAH concert, and who are just screaming, and hoping, that you may hear their request. They are, well you could say, begging, that you sing 'INTO WHITE'.

57. Hope you get to see around Liverpool.....it still has the aura, if you look in the right places. I am sure the crowd will be happy with any of your songs, old, or new, and I am sure you will be thinking the Beatles are still around somewhere! Looking forward, so very much to seeing you. 58. Yusuf,I am coming to see you on tuesday. I can't quite believe I actually just typed that and have the tickets in my sticky little hand! I was so desperately sad for you when I heard about Dublin. For me just being in the same airspace will be enough,don't really mind what you sing. You will never know how much impact you had on my life,Yusuf. Your music helped me through a very difficult childhood and I have loved you ever since. I have waited a whole lifetime to see you Yusuf,thankyou for coming to London. Please,please don't cancel. I was so worried after Dublin that you might decide to cancel the rest of the shows.
