Yusuf Nominated for Songwriters
Hall of Fame

It has just been announced – Yusuf is on the final ballot to be inducted into the US Songwriters Hall of Fame. He was unanimously chosen by the Nominating Committee to be included on the ballot that will go out to members for their votes next month.

This is the second time Yusuf has been nominated and he’s not overly expectant. “As long as my music is in the hearts, I’m not bothered if it’s not hung in the hall,” Yusuf commented.

Especially this line "All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside, Its hard, but its harder to ignore it." Sunny that is such a moving poem. 7. Dear Yusuf, I have grown up listening to your music, thanks to my elder brother who was lucky to meet up with you in a mosque in London around 2002-03. Pardon me,I don't remember the exact year. Nothing can replace Father and Son for me as that is something I can relate to most.I wish you all the peace. I also appreciate your philanthropic work.

9. Thank you to Yusuf and the webmaster for their thoughtful reply to Richard Firthâ€™s post. Iâ€™d like to add that Yusuf donated half of the royalties from his box set to the September 11 Fund â€“ to help all the victims of that atrocity â€“ Muslim, Christian, Jewish or otherwise. Itâ€™s good to remember that when violence is done in the name of religions or nations, itâ€™s the supporters and perpetrators of that violence who are guilty and not every member of those religions or nations. Since Iâ€™m a poet, I have a relevant poem I thought I'd share in my next post. Itâ€™s based on Islamic teachings, which give special honor to Muslims, Christians, and Jews, and refers us all as â€œPeople of the Book,â€ meaning that we all have the same basic beliefs. Islamic teachings also forbid the intentional harming of innocent life, even in war, and tell us that those who die as children go to heaven.

13. How much money has Yosuf given to the thousands of Israeli children victimized by the constant bombardment of missiles from the Gaza? If only he were as gracious to these precious children.
  
  Webmaster's Reply: Yusuf and his team have been in discussion with Leonard Cohen's management regarding how they may contribute to the Parents Circle - Families Forum, an organisation which helps the bereaved parents of both Israeli and Palestinian children who long for reconciliation in spite of their loss. Cohen himself has commented that "the bereaved parents' response to their suffering transcends the instinct for anger and revenge, and offers hope from the heart, even the hope for peace". It should be noted that any desire for peace must be mutually sincere - a starting point might be for ALL nuclear armed nations (including those that do not publicly acknowledge their possession of such weapons) to echo the words of Barack Obama who recently spoke of the need for global de-nuclearisation. Until all sides involved in the conflict are able to act fairly and justly, children of all sides will be threatened and will never taste the sweetness of sleeping in peace.

15. Yusuf certainly deserves it, without a doubt. His music were not just some of my very favourites, fabulous music . . but they had a quality of comfort that I still find in them. I grew up in Canada during the 60s and 70s, being 20 in 1970, and it was a time of interior losses for me with a superfically 'ok' life, plus the struggle of living during a time of upheaval and uncertainty for a young person. Nobody knew which way was up, but I did know enough to avoid drugs, even though all my friends were doing it, and a natural independence that kept me safe. It really was not a great time; the 70s were downright depressing, but Yusuf's music really made a difference. One song that had great significance for me was "Wild World", it seemed to be a cautionary song for me; and absolutely valid for a young girl with not a lot of guidance. A love of horses and art kept me more or less on track. Incidentally, any culture that can produce something as absolutely amazing as the Arabian horse, has to be a good one. It was wonderful to see him on You tube, since I'd never seen him perform. My 19 year old daughter has loved his music since she was about 10, I didn't realize she knew

16. It seems the most appropriate time for Yusuf to get this award, now he is back with all of us, but he'd already written enough years back to be chosen for it. He should get this award, otherwise there is no justice, and no point in the award existing.

17. Wonderful news! Long, long, long, overdue. I believe that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, too. His charitable and educational work are as formidable as his musical and artistic work. And what about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? His absence from this organization is grossly unfair and disheartening. I sincerely hope that Yusuf Islam(and his family) gets the recognition he so richly deserves.

18. Congratulations on your nomination - and I am hopeful this time around you will be selected. Your not being inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame -was ridiculous and an embarrassment for us. But as you yourself has said - your music is in our hearts - and maybe that is better than it being hung on the wall. Thank you for coming back to us - thank you for your kindness and thank you above all for being a person we can look up and strive to be like in our lives through your music..and gentle kindness. I can think of no songwriter alive today who more deserves the honour of induction in to a Hall of Fame that's specifically for those special individuals who, through the timeless power of music and verse, are able to improve peoples' lives. 25. Congratulations!!! This is indeed long overdue. In a world full of great musicians/songwriters...you are, hands down, the "Roger Federer" of the musical world. It's difficult for me to truly express what a talent you are and how your music touches my soul. I was too young to catch you on tour in the 70's and I do hope you make it to the U.S. for a few live shows (anywhere in California).
