Yusuf in Dublin

Last night at the o2 arena in Dublin, Yusuf gave his first ever performance in Ireland. The show marked the start of the Guess I’ll Take My Time tour, his first series of shows in over three decades.

Beginning the concert alone on acoustic guitar, Yusuf was joined over the course of the first act by his band, before breaking for the pre-advertised musical preview of Moonshadow. Following the preview, Yusuf returned to the stage to perform more of his songs both old and new. An incredible finale saw Ronan Keating surprise the crowd with a guest appearance, joining Yusuf for Father and Son – his first live performance since the death of his friend and fellow Boyzone member, Stephen Gately.

The show has received positive reviews from critics and concert goers, both for Yusuf’s own performance and the musical preview of Moonshadow.

1. This is for Bob Kurkela....I am flying from Ohio to NY to see the London show!!! I already have a ticket, but not in the 8th row! I couldn't even begin to explain to you my passion for Cat. I only had one opportunity to see him when he came to Madison Square Garden when I was growing up but my parents wouldn't let me go. I am now 50, a recent breast cancer survivor and nearly flipped when I learned he was doing this tour overseas. With no hesitation, I purchased a ticket. My thinking...if not now, when? I would love to sit beside you for this concert. I am traveling alone...by choice. I'm not certain that others in my life understand the connection I have to Cat's music. If nothing else...perhaps we could meet up on London. I am arriving early Monday morning, staying in the Hyde park area and leaving Wed. morning to return to the states. exmiller@wideopenwest.com

2. Choen was truly extraordinary, I went three times over the past 2 years. He played his new material as well as his back catalogue. It was one of the most atmospheric series of concerts I have ever been to. Tom Waits also gave a great show, with a good mix, mostly new matrerial but some old standards.

If, on the same night, there were two venues, one offering the real ABBA live onstage and the other offering ABBA the musical, with a cast of thousands and if I'd paid a large amount of money for my tickets to see the real ABBA live but I got a 40 minute promo for the cast of thousands next door.......I'd be well brassed off. You can, of course, do what you want. If you or Dylan or Cohen just turned up and sat on stage scratching your nose & telling the odd joke,many people would stay for the whole performance......just to be in "the presence". Some would, no doubt, call it art.Like it or not(and I think you do like it) your songs were and are the backdrop, the soundtrack to many of our lives.....way more precious than an up & coming musical. Nostalgia may not rule........but it is absolutely what your real listeners want.....ok, with enough tipping of the hat to what you are up to now. I saw Leonard Cohen last year. Stunning. He gave us 3 hours of his whole back catalogue. Four standing ovations. No-one has noticed him feeling compromised.The parallels between you & he are quite strong.......& I love you both. Can you really e mail him??? If you can, thank him for singing Don't Be Shy. Also tell him we were and did really enjoy the concert very much, and his little musical, which I would hope to see. You could tell him I was absolutely disgusted at some peoples behaviour but we are NOT allowing them to have ruined our night, with their ignorance and anti social behaviour. 6. Dear Yusuf, Your concert at the 02 in Dublin on the 15th of November touched me very deeply. I was moved by the warmth of your voice and the beauty of your melodies. The simple message of peace and hope in your lyrics is something which we all need to hear. It saddens me greatly that this went over the heads of those yobs in the crowd who came to swill pints and to take part in some sort of Karoake session after being in the pub all day watching the match. If they were disappointed, then that can only be a good thing. I greatly admired your courage and endurance throughout the event. You never once wavered and stayed present to yourself throughout it all. The young singers and dancers also showed a remarkable fortitude. It truly was a concert that demonstrated the triumph of light over darkness. Your inspiration and spiritual integrity has remained with my boyfriend and I we will always associate your uplifting music on what turned out to be a momentous day for us. 7. Dear Yusuf, I thought your voice was as brilliant as ever and your band was great at the 02 in Dublin on 17 Nov. That's the good bit. As for the content of the gig; the mini-musical was desperately bad - like a civil service am-dram group doing an am-dram version of Fiddler on the Roof. I agree some of the crowd were boorish, but they were provoked. I accept that professionally and personally you are a very different character from Cat Stevens. But 90%+ of the people were there because they love Cat Stevens' words and music and they associate these with important moments in their. They, and I, couldn't understand why you would allow the 'Big 3' - Father & Son, Matthew & Son and Wild World - to be butchered by others in the mini-musical. And when you came back on after the mini-musical you only did Father and Son and Peace Train from the classic Cat Stevens canon. Bottom line: you charged premium prices of â‚¬75-â‚¬100 a seat. 8. My friend and I attended the concert on Sunday night in Dublin and we thoroughly enjoyed the show. The people that were rude and obnoxious were in the minority and thankfully it didnâ€™t take from the enjoyment of the show for us. The excerpt from Moonshadow was beautifully done. 9. Hi Yusuf. The rude people were in the audience in Dublin were overwhelmingly in the minority, but unfortunately somehow managed to take over for a short space of time. Indirectly they were complimenting you, because they wanted to hear YOU, but they went about it such a rude way that I was actually embarrassed to be in the same audience as them. Please don't take that as a reflection of Irish people in general, and please come back some day. Thanks for all of the music. Louise.

10. Yusuf, We may be green in Ireland but we are not cabbage. The concert was marred by your mistake. You were ill advised to put on your musical. The audience were loyal to you (cost of tickets were over 100 Euro)and you provoked them unwittingly into anger and resentment. Don't add insult to your audience by blaming drinking and yobbish behavior. The one's who say they enjoyed the concert must have had drink taken. Brian

I was at the O2,i had an amazing nite,sorry for the idiots but please come back to Ireland again someday.There is a lot of anger in this country at the moment because of a terrible Goverment,people are gone crazy about the price of things,especially concert tickets. 13. What are they all moaning about? you pay a lot of money to go see an artist and if youfeel you are not getting what you want you let the artist know. I was there on Sunday night and although I did not join in the protest out of respect for Cat I could see why people were annoyed, they paid to hear Cat singing his songs not other people.I am sure Cat Yusuf is artist enough to understand this the audiance had no other way of communicating with him but they made it up to him when he came back with what they wanted I dont think they were being rude but thought that they were being had and that is not what they paid for. Indulge in your own time Cat. I am a fan since 1968 and I still love you Cat Yusuf but listen to your audiance. Well done on the musical but 15 minutes would have been enough. Now to the self richious heads out there, the state of them, a load of fat balding culchies who probably got the tickets free and wouldn't know a Cat Stevens song if it hit them in the face, I should know I was sitting beside some of them, go vent the same anger on the Government and we might see some improvement in the country at least the people who protested on Sunday night had the balls to do

14. I swore I wouldn't read about the shows leading up to London because I wanted to be surprised. However, I found myself on Youtube sneaking a peek at some of the videos posted from Dublin and naturally read the comments. That's when I saw that people were booing and walking out. So here I am, seeing the setlist and more commentary. I am flying over from New York for the London show. For me it's a spiritual experience as that is what his music has been to me over the years: spiritual. So, now let me say this, who wants to sit with me in the 8th row? I have an extra ticket and all I ask is the actual price I paid for it. I want someone who will truly ENJOY this experience. Tell me here if you are interested and how the music has affected you through your life. As for me? Well, when my mom died when I was 6 in 1974 I was a sad, lost little boy. It was in the latter part of 1970's that I found my brother's Tea for the Tillerman and Teaser & the Firecat albums. Healing began. And you?

I've never been as proud of my 17 year old daughter as I was on Sunday night when she said 'this concert is fantastic, if the rude people who are booing only wanted to listen to old things and not to see and hear new wonderful things, why didn't they just buy a best of cd?' We had a lovely mother and daughter weekend in Dublin made all the better by the fantastic concert on Sunday night.

16. I'm looking forward to seeing Yusuf in London next month. Reading about this, I've been disturbed that some people were clearly put out to hear others singing his songs, especially as they paid considerably for the pleasure. I knew the show was to be showcased when I bought the tickets, but I have waited many years for this chance to see and hear him live. There have been many shows based on other's music but rarely played as part of the author's gig. 40 minutes seems excessive, though I quite like the idea of 'try before you buy' so I am not critical of that. I can understand why people were upset if they thought they would not hear these songs by Yusuf. Clearly, some better communications were needed in advance. At least , I know what to expect in London, but am fearful that thousands of others are not and will repeat what went on in Dublin. I still expect to thoroughly enjoy myself!

19. I was also at the O2 on sunday. Its such a rare thing to know songs all your life and love them, and then get a chance to hear them actually live. Like hendrix or Jim morrison back from the dead. To me this was the measure of the night. And it was perfect , you were perfect. I know there is no excuse for stupid rude behaviour. But in a way the crazys just wanted all of you all of the time. 20. I came to Dublin from northern California particularly to see Yusuf and couldn't have been more excited and pleased with the show! His voice has only gotten better! His presence was comfortable and confident. I have been a huge fan since I was 12 years old,(that's 35 years), and I got the same great feeling that has inspired me throughout my life! Thank you so much Yusuf. By the way I went with my 21 year old son, we had killer seats, we loved the Moonshadow performance, and we didn't even see or hear any rude people we were so caught up in the show! 22. I really enjoyed the show on Sunday in Dublin. It was very special to see Yusuf in Concert. It was disrespectful to the artist and to those enjoying the show that people felt compelled to ruin it for everyone else. However, I walked away feeling I got a show and half, as promised by Yusuf. I hope Yusulf returns to Ireland and is not discouraged by the ignorance showed by a few on Sunday.

23. i too was at the Dublin concert and while i do not agree with the heckling and bad manners of the audience-it was not fair on the excellent performers, I do feel aggrieved that I had paid 100 euros for Yusuf Islam singing and instead got to hear other performers. Contrary to other posts, I never saw any advertisements which stated this preview was part of the show and if I had, I would not have purchased these tickets.30 years is a long time to be off the scene and then to charge such a high price on your, it is only fair to perform the whole concert yourself. If I want to see the music of Yusuf performed in a musical format, I'll choose to pay to see it - but I thought I had paid to see the Artist himself.

27. I really hope Yusuf doesn't think that we're all like those ignorant people in the audience. I hope he reads these comments and sees that there were some of us who really enjoyed the concert and appreciated seeing something new. He's still an evolving artist and therefore doesn't just do the 'greatest hits'. I was in the front row and it was fantastic...it was so great to see him and I hope that he's not put off Ireland forever by this.

28. My husband and myself attended the concert on Sunday in the O2. It was a dream come true (not to sound too clichÃ©d) to hear Yusuf perform live and we enjoyed every minute of it, new songs, old song, and the privilege of seeing part of Moonshadow, which we will definitely go to see when it opens. Credit to the cast who continued to give a great performance despite the behaviour of those badmannered and probably drunken people. We hope it will not stop you coming to Ireland again. 31. Like so many people who have posted I was at the o2 with my husband and friends. I felt so badly for Yusuf and all the cast and crew - no one deserved such appalling and vicious abuse. It only takes a small number of drunken morons to do such damage. I truly hope Yusuf will see some of these comments from people who feel so sad about what happened, and will not let this stop him visiting Ireland again. It is not representative of the feelings of the vast majority of the people who attended. Thank you Yusuf and everybody else - I thought the whole thing was wonderful and I will be going to see Moonshadow when it opens.

32. Yusef, I was at O2 in Dublin on Sunday with my two sons. I am 44 and they are 17 and 13!! We all loved the concert and thought you we brilliant. Was horrified by the few in the crowd who behaved so dispicably. The preview of Moonshadow did go on a bit long and therefore balance of show was not quite right but this is no excuse for some of behaviour on night. PLEASE do not judge the Irish as a whole as result of this experience. Keep singing and best wishes for your future venues. Diana

36. Now that the dust is settling concerning the Dublin O2 concert, itâ€™s clear that there are thousands of roses for every rotten tomato. If some thought theyâ€™d sabotage Yusufâ€™s show by booing and walking out, they were sadly mistaken, and those who foolishly followed the troublemakers were betrayed into missing out on the best part of the show. Isnâ€™t it interesting to think that the Moonshadow Musical is about the trials and tribulations that Stormy goes through in reaching the Sun, and everyone at the Dublin show actually got to experience some of Yusufâ€™s trials firsthand for themselves? Itâ€™s so uplifting to know that Yusufâ€™s true fans were smart enough to stay to the end. And Yusuf and the band and castâ€™s professionalism are pure inspiration - all can lift their heads, raise their voices, and proudly perform with more heartfelt conviction than ever. As for the Birmingham, Liverpool, or London shows, if I were to wave a flag as suggested by that simply brilliant little girl, Iâ€™d â€œdraw a perfect heartâ€ and write, â€œTo Yusuf, the musicians, and the cast of the Moonshadow Musical â€“ WE LOVE YOU ALL!!.â€ The show must go on. 37. I'm from Phoenix in the USA and I got up early to read everyone's comments because I was so excited to hear about Yusuf at O2. I've been heartsick all day. My goodness, me and millions more would have done most anything to have seen Yusuf live and get a preview of MoonShadow. To hear that people were that disrespectfull to the wonderful kids that worked so hard to bring a wonderful show (which by all accounts it was) to us boggles ones mind. All I can say, if you're going to these shows to see Cat Stevens circa 1976, go to YouTube - you can see him there in all his glory 24-7. If you want to see a fellow giving an extrodinary gift to his fans that we never thought possible, come to these shows and enjoy and be happy.

40. Great show in Dublin last night. Please forget the morons who had gone out drinking on an empty head. The perfomance was amazing, & the preview of Moonshadow was fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was nonetheless ashamed to be Irish and still cannot believe the way you were treated. I know your spirit will drive you on undeterred and I also know that you will understand that it was a small, albeit noisy, minority who were unappreciative of your great work.

We were at the Dublin concert last night, and although the musical may have been advertised in Ireland, we from the UK were not aware of it and I think the same appeared to be the case for many of the people sitting around us - most seemed to be as bemused as we were. As others have said, I'm sure if it had been announced as an extra part of the concert with Yusuf returning to the stage afterwards then the bad feeling would have been avoided. I love Yusuf's voice and was looking forward to hearing him sing - anything! The fear was that he was not going to come back at all. Especially for us on the other side of the water, 100 euros is an awful lot of money & it is hard not to start to feel aggrieved if you believe you're only getting half a performance! We were thanked for buying the expensive tickets, but Yusuf also said he'd reached the stage where he did what he felt like doing. Maybe I've taken that a bit too literally, but I do think there is a responsibility to your audience, and we would have liked to hear more of him singing. I agree with others - announce the musical 'extra' and perhaps shorten it a little... and add a bit more Yusuf time! Good luck with the re

43. Amazing concert last night was blown away with the performance and the extras that were added, was very impressed with the musical and felt privileged to be one of the first to see it. The cast were amazing and I wish them success with the musical, obviously its going to be a huge success! I will definitely be going to see it and sing along with all the classics. I had a â‚¬90 ticket and for the quality, length and imagination put into this concert/show, I would have paid â‚¬200. Peace Train was the song of the night, a close second was Lilywhite; the person next to me had tears in her eyes for most of the show. Line of the night â€œnow I know how Dylan feelsâ€. Ashamed to be Irish by the reaction of the crowd, just another example of how this county has changed over the past years, a total last of respect for a man whoâ€™s gentleness and respect shone through in the end and won the night. 44. Yusuf, Like many others on this board, I was at the concert last night and I was also very much aware of the impending "World Exclusive" which you had decided to grant to the people of Dublin. (One assumes because we are a musically aware audience) I loved the early part of the gig, I also loved the exclusive. I also loved the ending, but if all fairness, it was a little disjoint and could not have been what you planned. 46. Very mixed feelings.. loved hearing Yusuf sing old AND newer material. What a voice! I felt so sorry for the musical cast - very talented, but in an impossible position. My inner 'yob' felt like protesting too. I was there to hear Yusuf, not cover versions of his work! (the concert was advertised as Yusuf singing Cat Steven's greatest hits). After looking forward to the concert for so long, I left disappointed. The inclusion of the musical made the evening disjointed. And as per a previous comment I also had a feeling of dread that we wouldn't get to hear much more of Yusuf.

53. Yusuf - I don't know if you read these entries but my wife and I flew over from New York especially for the show and were enchanted and impressed. The middle section was great and, although we knew to expect it, it seems others didn't. I guess that part of the crowd wouldn't be interested in the West End production anyway so please ignore their reactions. Everyone sitting near us (well, except for two drunk guys) loved the middle piece and stood to applaud. Word of advice: maybe next time you should tell the audience "this middle part is xx minutes before the band comes back"or something to allay 'the mob'. At one point I said to my wife 'this reminds me of the Blues Brothers - maybe the band should play 'Rawhide' to placate them'. Enough of that. We are looking forward to the full West End production. The excerpt was great and your music so suited to a dramatic setting. The guy playing the lead male character was really very impressive by the way. Reminded us of a young Cat Stevens - intentional?

As an Irish person I am so ashamed that you had to endure the aggression that was on display last night. I also feel very sorry for the young performers â€“ especially the children . 59. I was also at the O2 last night and thoroughly enjoyed the concert, I was there with my brother and son and we all thought the concert was amazing. I have been going to concerts for over 30 years and have to say I have never witnessed a crowd turn on an artist the way the Irish crowd did lat night. It was not a typical response from an Irish crowd, as we are renowned for our good understanding & appreciation of an artists work. I was at Dylanâ€™s concert earlier this year and I love Dylan, but he was a pale imitation of his best. Yusuf you were magnificent last night, your voice has lost none of its power, your musicianship and that of your band was excellent, a real treat! As for the musical interlude, I enjoyed it but it did go on a bit loner than expected, and people did not fully appreciate that you would be coming back and singing some of the signature songs yourself. I agree with some of the others leaving comments that had you made that clearer for the audience, things might not have gotten out of control. I think that the songs were spectacular (especially the ones that I hadn't known the genius of previously) and the audience were over-demanding and missed the point of a live show i.e. not just karaoke-ing the greatest hits. That said, the musical preview was much longer than i expected and i was nervous that Yusuf wouldn't come back and play much afterwards. I think that once you charge 100 quid for a ticket you give up some of the right to do what you want, even if you have pre-advertised part of it. I brought my dad and girlfriend and it cost me nearly a month's rent so i can understand some people feeling aggrieved in the middle of the musical part of the show. I felt awful for the performers of the musical who sang brilliantly despite the tough conditions but I did feel like i was being ripped off at the time. Maybe I wouldn't have felt that way if Yusuf had said that he'd be back for another hour after the preview. I would say a little naive on his part. But then he handled the show so wisely after it so who am I to question his judgement? The musical isn't my kind of thing but neither did I want him to just play the ten greatest hits. I've never been to a concert where the main act started before 9pm. As a result i missed the first 4-5 songs. The tickets were a 40th birthday present from my wife. She wasn't as familiar with your work as I am and she in particular really loved the musical part. I think if that aspect of the show was seen by people who never knew who "Cat Stevens" was; they would have been blown away. I think you should rename the tour to the "No Requests Tour". 72. I was at the concert in the O2. I am a lifelong fan of Cat Stevens/Yusuf. The first ever pop record I bought was Catch Bull At Four at the age of 12. CBAF, Buddha, Foreigner, Numbers all are revisited in my house on a regular basis. All the records remain fresh, mystical and wonderful. I am deeply embarassed by the behavior of some people in the audience last night. I don't get why people shout out the names of songs and other comments. It's just a pain in the neck and embarassing. I much preferred the part of the show that wasn't the musical but there you go, I probably am like a lot of the audience on that score. However, I didn't walk out. I didn't abuse the players. I cheered for them and applauded. They did a great job on stage. Drink and, possibly, a need to vent due to the current state of this country and much ignorance and rudeness were at the root. We bought the tickets for Yusuf Islam, not Cat Stevens. The set list was great. We accept that some of the old material cannot be played, due to time constraints and for personal reasons. All artists e.g. Springsteen, McCartney, Sting are the same! 77. I too was at the O2 last night and thoroughly enjoyed the show. It was an absolute privilege to see live a man I was first introduced to when I heard his 'Tea For The Tillerman' album in the late '70's and have grown to love his music ever since. It was a terrible shame that the evening was somewhat dampened by the reaction of a minority of the crowd to the musical preview and for that there is no excuse, just plain rude. However I do agree with a previous comment made that perhaps if it had been made clearer exactly how long it was going to last and that Yusuf would return to sing more of his songs then maybe this wouldn't have happened in the first place. It really was a "show and a half" but unfortunately the rude people didn't realise that until it was too late. That's just my personal opinion and I must say the musical looks fantastic and I've no doubt it will be huge on the West End. The music was brilliant, the preview of moonshadow excellent, the hecklers and booers, awful. Like the others, we were ashamed to be Irish when you had priviledged us with this. The musical interlude was amazing. 90. I brought my family (six adults) to the O2 in Dublin last night. We had the best seats â€“ right up front. The concert was excellent and the musical excerpt was superb. The whole performance was professionally put together and very enjoyable. As a fan of Yusufâ€™s work over the years and a member of the Redroom I was fully aware of the fact that the musical was to be previewed and looked forward to it. The reaction of a small minority of the audience was very regrettable and many many people were embarrassed and offended by it and to that extent it did take from the overall experience which should have left everyone on a major high. Could I make a suggestion? Okay! Two things Set the scene and reassure. Tell everyone before the interval what is about to be presented and its duration and that Yusuf will return to the stage afterward. Also reassure them that some of the songs presented by the cast will be subsequently performed again when he does. The very best of luck with the remaining shows. Paschal Meehan

92. What an amazing concert! WOW! Yusuf, I hope you didnt get turned off last night by the hecklers in the crowd.... they were extreamly rude and there is no excuse for their behaviour. Your concert was just amazing.. we could have listened to you all night. The musical looks superb and I hope we get the oppertunity to see it in Dublin in the future. You came back on and rescued the evening for all your real fans by an extraordinary preformance which extended to a duet with our own Ronan Keating..... what a way to end the show. I hope you will return in the very near future and sing both old & new songs. Thank you for coming to Dublin and giving us the privilage to hear your wonderful voice in person.

93. I was at the concert in the O2 in Dublin last night. I am only 33 but have been to many concerts & last nights show was one of the best i have ever seen. The music was fantastic old & new. The musical was magical, whimsical & i really loved every second of it. I felt very priviliged to be one of the first people to see the preview of this beautiful musical. All the cast involved in the whole evening should be so proud of themselves. I will certainly be going to see the musical. Unfortunatly there were some people in the audience that were rude, ignorant, uncultured morons. I was totally shocked when i saw their attitude & behavior & for the first time in my life i was ashamed to be Irish. I was so outraged that yusuf & the cast & crew were treated like this, it was appalling. There is absolutly no excuse for their behaviour. I can only hope that this will not put off Yusuf & his family & all the cast members, and my 2 guests from Holland i had at the concert with me, from coming back to Ireland again. Thank you to Yusuf and all involved for the most wonderful time & an unforgetable evening. x
