Michael Jackson's Death

Following yesterday’s tragic news of the death of Michael Jackson, Yusuf, writing from Los Angeles, sent the following message:

“It’s always inevitable, but a shock when death comes. With Michael, it seems to me even more shocking, and I feel very sad. He seemed to have the heart of a child, though he was a giant of a musician. The moment I heard he had been taken to hospital, the worst was anticipated. I hope he finally worked out his purpose in life, before he left it. I just discovered his middle name was Joseph. He’ll be missed.”

Since many of us mourn him as a brother in Islam, and this is very important for us if he died as Muslim or not, since it would facilitate our sorrow to know that he will Inshallah be the tomb of a resting place ..

14. In case it helps, the following quote is from Yusuf's "Chinese Whiskers" (link):

  "Contrary to persistent press rumours, I was not at any kind of conversion ceremony for Michael Jackson. . . I have met Jermaine Jackson, Michaelâ€™s older brother, who became a Muslim some years ago. As for Michael himself, I hope that he finds inner peace and can return to making the kind of music that has inspired generations."
  
  So, it doesn't sound as if Yusuf knows whether or not Michael was a Muslim. In such a case, especially since to my knowledge Michael did not publicly deny being a Muslim, can't Muslims simply pray, "Oh, Allah, if he was Muslim, then forgive him, have mercy on him, and grant him the paradise?"

17. As I have looked at your history on the website and think of the struggles you experienced with fame and the music industry, I see similarities to Michael Jackson's struggles with the same. You listened and took the right road. I'm so glad you are teaching and leading the way through your songs. I heard one of your new songs on the radio and instantly recognized your voice! 19. Yusuf, I admire you completely and have nearly every piece of music you have ever recorded, mostly in vinyl of the earlier years and then on CD for the newer releases. Today Ii listened to Buddha and the Chocolate Box and realized that the song "Oh Very Young" would be so befitting of Michael Jackson. What do you think? John.

21. All apologies, but no matter his color, religion, or whatever, one who brings joy and peace to people should be blessed; one who teaches kindness and consciousness of all mankind and its frailty and tries to heal our frail world in whatever way he can should be blessed.
  
  This is what I grew up on in the "Cat Stevens" songs my mother played when I was a small child, and what I strive for in my everyday life. Instead of creating division and derision, let us instead try to find our similarities, support each other in our frailties and strive to achieve peace in our world, in our time.   Michael's death is sad, but having â€œthe heart of a childâ€ is good because itâ€™s an innocent and open heart that naturally believes in God. At least in that sense, God-willing, Michael was a Muslim, and may God forgive him, have mercy on his soul, and grant him peace and happiness in heaven.
