Alun Davies on Birmingham Show

After a lesson learnt in Dublin, the excerpts from the Moonshadow musical opened the evening. Yusuf, sitting on a wooden crate, patiently laid out what would follow. Then the cast took over and delivered the promise. The audience leant in, intrigued to hear old songs from new lips, you could’ve heard a pick drop.

5. When I was a teenager, my then girlfriend Val and I used to listen to Cat, (Teaser & Tea mainly) amongst other things. When we got back together after 24 years (we've now been married for 7 years) we started to go out and see all the music from our youth, but the one that we stridently yearned for was to see Cat Stevens perform. We knew that it was a pipe dream but we started to get excited first with the heartachingly beautiful Indian Ocean to support people affected by the Boxing Day Tsunami and then with the Alan Yentob documentary, we dared to hope that Yusuf may be preparing to revisit his music. Then came An Other Cup which was in the CD player as soon as it was in the shops, followed by Roadsinger and the 7" (yes, I still have all my LPs and play them). Then Yusuf started to appear, quietly, dipping his toe, Cafe Sessions and Island 50 amongst others. We bought Cropredy tickets as soon as they were released, then a few weeks later, the rumour of a guest spot. Come the night, I was stood with Val, holding hands and tears running down my face but with the widest grin, my face started to ache with joy! Then came that email to my phone, Yusuf in concert! 6. Alun as the heading of your blog reads, I TOO!!!!, wish I could have been there. CONGRATULATIONS for an amazing performance. Looking forward to reading more of your thoughts, and feelings. If anyone has a place on this site, it is you. Seeing you, and Yusuf together, makes it all perfect now, full circle. You compliment one another beautifully as no other two artists I have seen. 7. I had the great fortune to be there on Monday night it Brimigham...it was magical, thrilling, awe inspiring, words fail me. Yusuf, if you're reading this you must know that truly you are a gift from God Almighty, such talent can only be! When I hear you play, it's like a manifestation of His grace. I can't wait for the muscial, Moonshadow to come out next year. It's such a great culmination of a lifetime of music....happy to be alive to have experienced this wonderful event....all thanks to God...

9. Alun's blog is so superb to read. We where indeed there on Monday and it was the most memorable and emotional concert ever attended. We hoped as we stood with rest of the audience at the end tear- filled and laughing, cheering and applauding that you all on the stage knew how we all felt; so good to hear that you did. Thank you so very much.

10. What a lovely Redroom blog from Alun- we can feel the warmth curling in! And we in the Birmingham audience did!The review I read that said everyone had smiles on their faces all night long was just spot on. From the moment Yusuf lovingly introduced his musical and its cast the smile never left my face-and it is still lingering!

12. (Parts of this comment are posted on the previous blog-post) Spending over 800 pounds for a trip to england because of yusuf isn't something everyone does. Even though i emptied my bank account for money and spent 7 hours walking the day before, 7 hours walking the day of the concert, and 7 more after, i don't regret it! It was the most wonderful evening of my life, and even though i'm young, still 17, i'm a great Cat/Yusuf fan. Based on what i've seen on the Majicat dvd, 1976-concert was nothing to compare with yusuf and the moonshadow-cast in birmingham. I absolutely loved the whole thing. It was perfect in every single way and i'd love to see him perform again. Seeing you Alun, with Yusuf and the rest of the band on the stage, is another special feeling. After watching all the videos posted on Youtube hundreds of times, i still can't get enough of you two. You have the perfect voice to backup Yusuf, and i really enjoy listening to Daydo (especialy your version of portobello road). Thank you Yusuf and Alun for everything! PS! About your boots & sand comment, you couldn't have said it better.
