A Stormy Start to the Tour

[Updated] Strange how God’s nature has a way of telling you the way things are going to go. Perhaps, if I had understood the message hidden in the stormy weather forecast on Saturday evening, I might have been better prepared for what happened the next night at Dublin’s O2…

As I said to you, there's lots and lots of brazilians who loves your music and would be so happy if you could come here in Brazil (Rio de Janeiro). 3. BTW, in my humble opinion, Yusuf was NOT naïve to include a musical showcase in his concert - because it’s not that Yusuf doesn’t see what WE see - it’s that we don’t always see what HE sees. But when I watched the concert, I could see that all of Yusuf’s songs, old and new, circle back into a beautiful, shimmering ring that forms a perfect setting for this gem called Moonshadow. OK - the ring and the gem are very different – a precious metal and a precious stone – but they’re still beautiful together. Plus, the showcase lets us enter an imaginary world created by Yusuf himself - we actually get to look through Yusuf’s eyes and into his heart for just a little while. I think that’s special. I thank God for the songwriting gift He’s given to Yusuf, and I thank Yusuf for putting himself out there and warmly inviting us to stretch our horizons and share his stories, visions and dreams.

4. I finally got the chance to watch the YouTube videos of Yusuf’s concert at Dublin’s O2. Now I know why so many fans have mentioned tears! It was all so poignant and I found myself crying as well. I especially liked Lilywhite and the Father and Son duet with Ronan Keating. Bad Brakes was a surprisingly nice breath of fresh air. Not to mention that Noel Sullivan gives a really powerful performance - so intense – so immersed in his part – truly superb.

I thought that everyone here would be interested in knowing that the Sydney Morning Herald has a nice little article about how Yusuf's fans rallied around him after the Dublin O2 (http://www.smh.com.au/news/entertainment/islam/2009/11/18/1258219865322.html). 8. continued... I lost my train of thought for that long comment I just posted...What I was trying to relay is that I like everything about the word or term "moonshadow" even the sound of it. Maybe some of your other fans can address this and let know how you would probably feel about it. What I also wanted to find out is whether or not you've written a book of poetry and whether you plan on writing an auotbiography. If not, I hope you will. My dyslexia is kicking in so I'll end. 9. Hi again Yusuf, I hope you've gotten some rest after your first concert and are looking towards the next. There's definitely no excuse for ignorance but I'm going to plead that now. When I was in my teens (now 52),there was nothing or no one that compared to you--your music, lyrics, voice, soul. Then you left, and now I understand why. A few mos. ago, I saw your interview with CBS Sunday Morning, and I didn't allow myself to take it all in at the time. I began finding myself looking for your songs that I was familiar with. I've been playing them ever since. Not off topic, but I've had a lot of cats (house pets) and have studied their behavior. I felt that I was nonchalantly sneaking up on that part of my life that included your music--the bittersweet memories and the fact that I've never been a big fan of "now." But there's something about you that's calming and stabilizing. I've felt this way since I've found your site. Before I even found it, and I hope you and everyone understands this--- as I wrote before, I comment on the Daily Nightly blog (Brian Williams). 14. Thank you, Yusuf, for the great performance in Dublin. I travelled all the way from Finland and I am not at all dissapointed in my dicision to come! Of course the experience would have been better if some spectators would have had decent manners. Anyway, the first part was nearly perfect and after the break the performance on stage was very good (regardless of the poorer performance outside the stage). However, I have to say that in a way I understand the mannerless people, although I detest the mannerlessness itself, because the musical theatre (or any cover) versions of your songs are from a diffent planet when compared with Your versions (they belong to a completely different category, are actually more or less incomparable). Consequently, after 40 minutes of almost perfect performance with You singing, it is inevitable that the atmosphere can't be the same when cover versions are sung (however well they are performed). In my opinion it was almost unfair to the musical people to have to perform after you. To be continued...

16. Hi Yusuf, I accidently posted on your BBC post. So I'll just repeat a few things. I'm new to your site but not your music. I grew up here in the South, S.C. My friends and I were in our teens in the early 70's. I think your music kept us cool and out of trouble(for the most part). I hope you get to come to the States. 20. There were no doubts for me you'd make the best of it, when we all were surprised about this disrespectful behaviour of some people at die O2 in Dublin. My boyfriend, his sister and me, we came from Austria to experience this wonderful and exciting moment when you come back on stage to connect again. For me it has started with such a great and nearly unbelievable story in Greece that brought me to you in Dublin. I am maybe one of your youngest fans and so all I want to say is: YUSUF you motivate in everything you do and say, or sing and play... to have faith and trust in what we are. Dear Yusuf,Imagine after 33 years I find out that you are going to perform in my lovely Ireland.I could not sleep the saturday night after so many years that I saw you in Rotterdam.Many people were so emotional when you walked onto the stage and so was I!A lady next to me who drove for 5 hours from Donegal was even crying! We did not know at all that this was going to be the program and even if we would have known.People who love your new and old music most probably do not like musicals at all.We just came to welcome our hero and I honestly believe this was the absolute wrong timing to program it like this.We also did not know if you would come back later.People felt a sort of betrayed, because they love you so much! and every minut without you on stage was simply a waste of time You are still and will always be my hero, but please understand our emotions too.See you in Liverpool!!! 23. DM's post nailed it. Everybody paid the same for the tickets. Not as if the people who enjoyed the concert were there for free. If anybody needs to apologize, it should be the ill-mannered, aggressive elements who interfered with the right to enjoyment of the others. If you have an issue, take it up with the management and ask for a refund if you can prove you were shortchanged. The unruly behaviour at this show is a mirror of the current worldwide malaise. Bullying by individuals/groups who want to have their way at the expense of others. Intimidating just because you feel you can get away for it. Seeking the easiest outlet for frustration. And even had these people been in the majority, this behaviour would still be dead wrong. When you go deeper into it you can understand how such attitudes are a real threat to the peace process that people like Yusuf are committed to. We need to think this through clearly, muster our numbers and channel our positive attitudes to counter these negative forces with calm strength. 26. The more I read the posts and ponder the Dublin Debacle the more I am totally confused. When I purchased my tickets to London it clearly stated "Including Special Premiere Showcase of the Musical Moonshadow with songs by Cat Stevens." Ok, call me an arrogant New Yorker who has been to many Broadway shows, but this clearly indicates that the concert is going to have a Broadway/West End component. Not only that, it states "with songs by Cat Stevens." When I read this I read it as there would not only be actors but that the actors would also be singing songs "by Cat Stevens." Do people think he intentionally misled them? And do people truly believe he is anti-Irish because of a tongue in cheek comment on drinking too much Guinness? The folks who think this is somehow an Irish vs English thing really have lost it. He has responded to the criticism, is printing up a program and is trying to make the event even better...though I would be happy to see it just the way he had it arranged initially. It's as if some folks think he's going to magically disembark from a Longer Boat and PRESTO...it will be 1976 again. For these folks I can only say one thing: yo

27. Yusuf, thank you for a wonderful event. I was in the 5th row at the Dublin concert, came all the way from Seattle, WA. Never been to Ireland before and had never had the chance to hear you in person. I've been a fan since '71. Like many here I was shocked by the response of some of the fans. Some around me where brought to tears by the reaction. It was a very emotional night for those of us who have been fans of Cat Stevens and remain fans of Yusuf. The comments here certainly make clear the factors that caused the ire. Your response in the moment was so gracious and on point as to understanding why some may have been upset, citing both the length of the Moonshadow presentation and the price of the tickets. It was worth the time and resources to hear you. As many have expressed here, I did not attend expecting a "Cat Stevens" concert, I went to hear Yusuf as he exists today. In doing so, I fulfilled a life long dream to hear you sing in person. I hope Moonshadow will be a success for you, and that it will bring your body of music to the attention of new generations. 28. Hopefully we can draw a line under what happened on Sunday evening. I don't think there is anything to be gained from turning this into a racial slanging match. The right thing to do if you are unhappy at an event is to leave the auditorium quietly, speak to somebody in authority and ask for recompense. 29. I'd have to concur with Patricia. My wife and I also left sober and quietly during the musical. I strongly disaprove of any abuse that was sent in your direction. The rugby was a sucess! You are better than having to resort to sad drunken stereotypes. Perhaps you are still in shock and will work that out after some further reflection. 30. Yusuf, thank you for your blog, I think you summed it up quite well. Paricia Hogan did you read the advertisement clearly displaying the showcase of the musical? What gave you the right to slowclap and ruin the show for me and everyone else who had the good manners to know what they were going to see. We also paid for our tickets to have it ruined by a minority. Don't drag the British oppressing the Irish into this, thats cringe worthy. Were I was drink certainly played a part in SOME of the hecklers. I nearly wish that was the excuse but clearly certain people are just as ignorant sober.

33. Yusuf, Months ago my sister bought tickets for your concert as a treat for my birthday. Like most of the respectable audience, we are middle-aged, we did not come from the international rugby match and we did not drink gallons of Guinness. We really enjoyed the first half as did most others. The over- long promotion of your Moonshadow London show in the second half was a fatal mistake which you now seem to recognise. We joined in the slow handclap and then walked out extremely dissapointed because the show was by then ruined. You made some mistakes and at first you seemed to accept that you needed to learn from them. However you have compounded your error by falling into the infamous British tradition of painting the Irish people as a drunken mob. As a member of a historically opressed group you should be more sensitive. These are/were your fans and loved the music that made you famous. Don't slander your fans or soon you will have none. 34. Yusuf, your music has inspired me for many years now. Being Irish(and a proud Dubliner) I was shocked at what happened on Sunday. I wish that was all that shocked me, what you say in your blog "The tendency of some to drown away the blues of a hapless draw with a few more gallons of Guinness obviously didn't help either" I don't mind how the game finished,not a bad result. What shocked me is what you said about drinking a few more gallons of Guinness. It was uncalled for and offensive. I love to hear your new music and you playing it live is excellent. 36. I had third row seats at the concert on Sunday night. I am originally from Australia and live in New Jersey, U.S.A. When I heard about the concert I decided to travel to Ireland, a place which I have always wanted to go to. I absolutely loved Ireland. I am a huge fan of Yusuf's music both old and new. I regard the lyrics as deeply spiritual and Yusuf has an anointing. I loved Yusuf's performance on Sunday night. I did not personally care for the 'Moonshadow' preview which was not a preview as it was way too long and I felt it was severely lacking. But I respect Yusuf and I trust that he was directed by the Spirit and that is only what counts. Keep on trusting and obeying Yusuf.

37. It's been a long time since "popular" meant "good". For an artist to exist today, they are practically forced to do the same thing over and over until their creativity is crushed. Hi was at concert with my partner, with no drink involved-people always tend to jump on the "drunken irish"bandwagon when anything goes wrong.I enjoyed the first part of the concert fabulous songs crowd were in great form-the random "musical" in the 2nd half was the disaster.Granted the show is excellently done not disputing that but didnt pay €200 to see a musical-bought the tickets to see YOU perform not other people sing your music.Really really disappointing if we knew what to expect great-we didnt know were u coming back, the musical went on and on and on.I didnt boo or leave but was thoroughly disappointed with the night.If we wanted to see the musical we would buy tickets for it- misleading event.One or two songs would have been ample, ye majorly over did it.Still a fan and would prob go to the see the musical but the point is-we didnt pay to see a musical, we wanted to see u sing.

I have been a fan of your music since my college days and it was great to "meet" the man behind the voice. Thanks for your songs and for your grace in handling the discontented masses on Sunday night. It made me ashamed to share a country with these oafs. While I was not expecting the musical interlude, I thought it interesting and quirky. I wish you and your band and cast members all the best in the rest of the tour. 41. Yusuf, Can I start by saying that I really enjoyed the show on Sunday night in Dublin's O2. I, like so many it would appear, was unaware of the Moonshadow project and preview. I, however, enjoyed it very much. It seems a culture has grown out of the Dublin gig scene in which it is okay to shout out songs that you wish to hear to the artist during breaks in the performance. It's as if buying a ticket somehow involves you in the creative process. Nonsense, ofcourse. Plenty of posts have expressed pretty much how I fealt on the night, so I won't dwell on it any longer, just to say that I hope it's not too long before we see you again. 42. I thought the show was wonderful. I am a Cat addict so if he had just walked on stage and played CD music it would have been enough for me. i thought all the musicians were superb, very close to original. I was with my son who was very upset by the loutish drunks up at the back. It is very hard to prevent this but the O2 management could have asked for decorum and shown Yusuf immediately how pissed off 95% of the audience were with the louts. Wonderful wonderful show. 45. I think the behaviour of the mob at Yusuf's Dublin concert was disgusting. It's exactly for this reason that I stopped going to large concerts in the last couple of years. There seems to be a group of people in Ireland that go to concerts not for the music but as an adjunct to a mob piss up. If they aren't trying to push people around or start fights in the crowd they're chanting and talking shite over the act. The gig was better off with them gone anyway.

Yusuf, I came from Chicago for the show- so I knew about the Moonshadow because I had been following this- but the average fan at the gig did not- maybe a lack of clarity in local advertising- I think in your blog you hit all the correct points- an announcement and a shorter section would probably be just the ticket- and the fans did not know if you were coming back as you thought. That being said, I thought the reception for the new material in the first set was good- and was enjoyed and flowed well with the old stuff- truth be told you haven't lost a step, the new material is strong- I believe the reaction to the new stuff in the second set was just carry over frustration- the set and choice of material was appropriate and fabulous- DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO- we won't leave you. 48. Dear Yusuf, First of all, thank you for giving us these wonderful concerts. It's sad there are always a few bad apples to distroy a party. And it sounds like there were quite a few. As Jane and others said, it is too bad they did not read brochure, before purchasing their tickets, before becoming obnoxious.. Thankfully there were enough TRUE fans to squash out all their rude behaviour and show their support. Reading what you have written, my heart aches wishing we could have, would have, articulated better our experience of the show. It was nothing short of amazing. I too burst into tears at the start of the show (and in meeting you all). I think years and years and years of hopes and dreams, crystallized. A lifetime of my mothers love for your music, carried through her 4 children, all came crashing in. The tears wouldn't be stopped. What you and your whole company offered was nothing short of stunning, and we were all offered a gift so rarely offered freely and with such love. And sometimes, people, humans, we get it all wrong. I wish I could apologize for everyone. I can only say again, thank you. You said "I didn’t go through my life, altering my pattern of behaviour, building my faith and getting close to Divine consciousness without making serious changes to the way I do things." 51. Dear Yusuf, I bought tickets for the Dublin show for my wife's birthday. We both attended on Sunday last. She has been a lifelong fan and credits you and your music with bringing her parents together. So I guess I have you to thank for sending my amazing wife my way!!! She burst into tears at the beginning of the show and I think it was then I truly began to appreciate the power of music. She loved her birthday present and I have to say that I always saw you as an incredible artist filled with positivity and integrity who I couldn't rate highly enough. Then I witnessed the behaviour of a small section of the crowd on Sunday night and realised I had underestimated you. The disappointment was evident in your face. Not necessarily for you but for your band and the Moonshadow performers. The grace and resolve you displayed was a true lesson to me. Thank you for making a dream become reality for my wife. I only hope that this isn't your last experience of Ireland. 52. First of all, I apologize that my last post keeps being repeated. I'm certain I only hit "Submit" once. Second, there are times when, for some reason, I need to listen to the song "100 I Dream." When I follow my instincts and listen to it, there is a line or two of the song that shouts at me. Just now I had one of those moments and the words that shouted at me were "Wherever you go the world will follow, so let your reasons be true to you." I just can't imagine Royal Albert Hall without that song... INTO WHITE. After hours and hours searching for videoclips, reviews, impressions etc. (the result is on Majicat board), even if I was not in Dublin (but tnx to cyberspace it seems to me that I partialy was)... well, I can proudly say that Yusuf did great concert, and that the majority of the audience were very enthusisastic... If you watch superb version of Moonshadow (song) and Peace Train you'll find that the crowd, normal Cat Yusuf fans, were enjoying in the performance... Father & Son was also very touching because Ronan Keating had just lost his best friend from the band, so I think that for him to perform together with Yusuf live in Dublin was much more than anybody can imagine, escape of the darkness of his past days (as I read in news that he was very shaken with his lost)... So, after few days everybody will recognize how in fact great this concert was, despite all bad things that happened. And I think that the other concerts will be also great, and that The Royal Albert hall will be in many ways (musical, emotional...) The Grand Finale :) I only have one wish (but will not booo if Yusuf will not play that song:)... and that wish is INTO WHITE.

Sorry, the crowd's reaction was horrible. i guess if they'd just been told clearly that the musical was only for half an hour and then more Yusuf they'd v had more patience. or if it was 30 mins before the actual concert. 63. Hi I was at concert on sunday . I certainly didnt enjoy it . I felt afraid as the crowd were so irate I had to leave as the people were throwing items from behind . I have been to 89 concerts since 1981 and neve have i witnessed anything like sunday night. I paid 96 euro for my ticket . because of the intimadiation i had to leave for my safety . the musical should have been printed on the tickets and people would have been prepared. It was poor thinking on the promotors behalf. I left but i did enjoy the concert for the first section and then it went so wrong.

I cannot apologise sufficiently for the behaviour of some sections for the crowd. No mater what the expectations of those involved, or their misunderstanding of the sequencing of the show, it was inexcusable, and I admired the graceful and dignified way in which both you and the cast handled the situation. 67. I guess the only way to reflect on Sunday was to see it as a learning experience. We learned that recessionary Ireland can be an unattractive sight, mind you so were the Tiger years. We might regain our national equilibrium soon. Yusuf's voice is a great as ever and the new material is interesting. However, the structure of the show was poorly conceived and communicated and that, along with some unreasonable audience expectations lead to the problems. After a 20 minute interval, Yusuf played for 5 minutes and left for another 45 minutes, with no explanation. The bond between performer and audience that is worked out in live music was unfortunately stretched too far and never repaired fully. Essentially it was a lack of mutual respect, the audience for responding in a boorish manner, which is unforgiveable, and Yusuf for overindulging and not explaining his musical project. The good news is that the London and Birmingham concerts should be excellent. Thanks for the first 50 minutes, very memorable. After that the karma was gone and so was I.

69. It gave me a lift to read your blog today and I am glad that you were able to take something positive out of Sunday night. For me it was a wonderful performance and I enjoyed every minute. My wife is a somewhat later convert to your music but she was totally enthralled. We were both totally ashamed by the behaviour of some of the audience but I hope that the antics of the few cannot hide the sheer delight that the vast majority had in the performance of the band members, musical cast and of course yourself. 72. Yusuf, just wanted to add my voice to those mortified fans who were so embarrassed on Sunday night by the reactions of the crowd in Dublin. Even if they did not realize how long the musical would go on for, or thought that you were not coming back to the stage, there is no excuse for the vile booing, jeering and general abuse that was hurled at the stage (nor for the people screaming at you to sing old songs - it's a concert to promote a new album, for goodness' sake, not a greatest hits tour). The performers in the musical must have been so disappointed at a reaction that was nothing to do with them - especially the two little kids (who were great). The baying idiots in the audience showed no respect and unfortunately drowned out those of us who really enjoyed the concert. I feel terrible that your first full concert in so long was marred so badly but please remember that those people were a horrendous minority. The concert was a wonderful experience and I feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to hear you sing live. Thank you for a beautiful evening.

Definitely the best concert I have seen in years, though unfortunately marred slightly by a section of inebriated and loud 'fans' who came along expecting to see Cat Stevens, circa 1971. They may be having trouble moving on but not so Yusuf, whose songs have matured and sound better and more meaningful than ever. Dublin awaits his return.

83. My husband and I attended the concert in Dublin, flying in from the US. We had the most magical and beautiful evening. We were shocked by the unnecessary outbursts with the theatrical presentation and felt a great deal of alarm for the cast of the show as well as you. Your handling of the situation was with the grace and dignity that you have always had - and quite frankly - we had the time of our lives. I am so grateful that you have come back to write/sing for us. I am also grateful that you have your dreams ahead of you - which I know will be successful. Your cast was simply wonderful. 84. Dear Yusuf... And, I say "dear" because you are dear to me. As a child, my father taught me about metaphor as we drove the highways and back roads listening to your music. "Longer Boats" was key to my understanding of poetry, and the experience expanded my mind and opened my world to broader thinking and creativity. I now have the opportunity to teach students in a university setting about personal, intellectual, and moral growth and about the moments in our identity development when our minds are blown by dissonance and we have to see the world in bigger ways in order to make sense of it for ourselves. "Longer Boats,"Into White" and others did that for me as a child, who previously didn't realize that abstract images where sometimes necessary to best express feelings and ideas. 90. Than you Yusuf for a magical and beautiful evening in the O2 in Dublin. I will never forget it. I hope the few that heckled did not give you a bad taste towards the fans that thought the musical was beautiful. I thought it was brilliant and will look forward to the full show when it comes out. Please pass on my appreciation to the cast also.I'm so glad that you chose Dublin at all and I thank you for a wonderful night and wonderful music and thank you for all the years that your music helped me through tough times and good times and I count myself honoured that I ever got to see you and your musical live and the message of peace you bring with you is an example to us all. The behaviour of the so called fans disgusted the majority and if they hadn't wanted to see a preview of your (really wonderful) musical they should have stayed at home. I felt ashamed to Irish but im so glad that you had the good grace and dignity to rise above it.I'll make it my mission to go see Moonshadow when it opens!Loved hearing you perform World O' Darkness and Boots n Sand then again id love to have heard you sing the full album too haha. 93. Yusuf, I am flying over from New York for the London gig. I just read your blog about the Dublin gig. As a children's author, I can tell you that I recently experienced some harsh criticism at a school I lectured at. It so happens that the school is the school my daughters attend. I was hurt, angry, everything all mixed up into one. What did I do? I took a deep breath, listened to my wife, and took the criticism for what it was: a chance to make my presentation BETTER. So please, "take your time" altering the concert as you see fit. Most importantly, realize that most of us have been with you on OUR shared spiritual journeys for decades and truly appreciate the fact that you are back on the stage. Heck, if you just sat up there on the stage in London and talked and occasionally played a song I would be delighted, much like the Chris Isaak show. Be well my brother, Bob

Yusuf, our friend Sue has already used the perfect word to describe how you are handling the show in Dublin, and that word is “grace.” Yesterday I was mired in indignation at how you were treated and today I am joyful to see such grace from you. I, too, wondered why people would expect a Cat Stevens concert from a man named Yusuf. In the upcoming shows, may you be treated with the warm, welcoming, loving audiences you so deserve. I can barely wait to see you in London!

95. Apologies again, I just wanted to finish what I had to say and this is really the end of it! Moonshadow, and the new songs Yusuf sang, were just as important sections of the concert as the songs from the 'Cat Stevens' days and those people who didn't see things this way, and acted like spoiled brats because they weren't getting the songs they wanted, really should have stayed at home and watched their reality tv programmes - there were more than enough of us who were there for the right reasons, to enjoy and show our appreciation of Yusuf and his music. When the concert was announced in September it was made clear that a section of 'Moonshadow' would be incorporated into the programme so those who did not want to accept that should have saved their money, and avoided spoiling the concert for Yusuf and his performers, and the genuine admirers of his music.

96. I actually wept with disappointment and shame on Sunday night. I was one of your audience and thought you were amazing, I've never been in such an aggresive situation before and it horrified me. I was delighted you sang from your new albums as well as the old, my little ones love you and you bring as much happiness to them as you did to me. Sometimes we attribute wisdom to age, (the grey tends to help), however, often it is reached through spiritual consciousness, which allows us to find our hearts and true selves. All of us fans at the O2 were very sorry for the reaction by a few...... Great to hear our favorites - some of the lesser known songs even. Welcome treats indeed, treasures. 100. After so many years listening to the songs, it was a great experience to see Yusuf perform in Dublin. The issues relating to the crowd were the last thing you would expect at this type of event. However in the absence of knowledge, darkness can prevail. I believe that people are passionate about the music and although it is no excuse for their behaviour, they believed that Yusuf was not returning to the stage. Their reaction was shameful but came from a lack of communication. I have always loved the spiritual nature of the music and was moved by the gentleness and humanity that Yusuf brought to the stage that night. It was a privilege to be there and hopefully Yusuf and everyone else involved will forgive the few and accept the warmth and appreciation of the many.

102. Please don't write off Ireland of you ever do another tour...I was there on Sunday and I'm so ashamed at the way you and the cast were treated. As you said, the vast majority of the audience would have been happy if you'd gone on stage and sang Baa Baa Black Sheep! If you ever come again I'd pay any money to attend. I don't go to many concerts as I hold out for artists I really want to see. Your songs were my constant companion throughout my teens and 20s and the day I bought my tickets in September was an emotional one involving a number of tissues and a very bemused husband and 5 children! My husband's taste would generally be a lot 'heavier' (Metallica) but he thoroughly enjoyed your newer material just as much as the older 'stuff' . I'll definitely go to Moonshadow if I get a chance. 106. Dear Yusuf, The realist that is me says I may never get to be lucky enough to attend any of your live performances unless you visit India, yet I'm a dreamer and I believe those who dream win. I've always loved your songs(the few that I had a chance to hear in my student days in the seventies) and held the music and the message in my heart. I rediscovered you (interestingly through a dream) in the twin persona of Cat and Yusuf, all at once, only three months ago. My life has been enormously enriched by knowing you through your old songs (there are many I never got to hear back in the seventies) as well as the exquisite new songs and some of your sacred music. I've been doing an incredible amount of catching up. Your spirit, at once gracious and humble, brave and determined, shows through in your blog post. I love how you have handled and accepted your experience at the Dublin show as you would a gift from God - something to use for greater good. 107. It was a wonderful opportunity and privilege to attend the Yusuf Islam concert in Dublin on Sunday night. The only thing that spoiled it for me and other sincere attendees was the behaviour of some of the audience whose behaviour resembled what one might expect at a very different type of concert. One would have expected better from a crowd of largely over fifties. Heckling at a concert is unforgiveable and walking out from a concert is a gross insult to any artist, particularly one of Yusuf's calibre. The lack of maturity these people displayed showed a terrible lack of appreciation - as Yusuf himself said, he tried to give us a show and a half and that is exactly what he did. The excerpts from the musical 'Moonshadow' were an extra, an added bonus - we were not deprived of any Yusuf time because of Moonshadow. He was very generous with his singing time, and we were spared the ordeal of any unwanted support acts which other singers use to fill time. Moonshadow is a marvellous piece of work and I eagerly await the opportunity of seeing it in full. I commend all of those who took part on their superb performance. I am sure that a man of Yusuf's intelligence would be aware that the

110. Yusuf, I'm glad you survived (with your usual grace) the startling behavior of a part of the audience in Dublin. Those of us who have followed you and your music these past 30 odd years were stunned by what transpired. A learning experience for us all.
