Steven Demetre Georgiou is born in London on a full moon night. The date coincides with the 15th of Ramadan 1367H in the Islamic lunar calendar. He’s the youngest of Stavros and Ingrid Georgiou’s three children with an older sister, Anita, and brother, David. The Georgiou family runs a cafe, the Moulin Rouge, in the heart of the West End. The family’s living quarters are above the shop; Steve’s bedroom window looks out on the stage door of the Prince’s Theatre, where “Kismet“, “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” “Hair” and many others have their British premiere. Although he is sometimes pressed into duty in the restaurant, his love’s encouraged by his parents are, painting and music.
His sister Anita’s record collection includes Sinatra, Gershwin and a variety of classical and contemporary music, while brother David is partial to the Everly Brothers and Buddy Holly. Steve takes it all in, as well as the pulse of the theatre district, where he and a friend often climb the fire escape to the roof of the Prince’s Theatre, to hear and to feel the vibrant musicals going on below as they watch the lights come on all over London.
