Tea for the Tillerman Live: A Classic Concert (DVD Review)
Cat Stevens – Tea For The Tillerman Live
By Lynn RobertsThe father of folk-rock as he’s meant to be seen
This recording shows Cat Stevens at the height of his creativity in the early 70s, when he produced both Tea For The Tillerman and the equally brilliant Teaser & The Firecat. Recorded at the KCET Studios in Los Angeles on 8 June 1971, when Stevens was at No 1 in the US Billboard chart with Wild World, he performs seven of the 11 tracks from Tea For The Tillerman, while opening with Moonshadow from Teaser.
This intimate gig sees Stevens alongside long-time guitarist Alun Davies. It serves as a reminder that Stevens was as good a songwriter as his contemporaries James Taylor and Donovan, if not better. His performance is also excellent; songs that sound gentle on studio albums take on a new meaning when performed live with a snarl.
Released for the first time on DVD, to coincide with Yusuf Islam’s 60th birthday, the disc includes the short animated film Teaser & The Firecat, which was narrated and directed by Spike Milligan. This is Cat Stevens as he should be seen: live, in an intimate setting and with a raw energy. A must for fans.
